iPhone & Android market share up as BlackBerry & WinMob slips in U.S.

ComScore released their latest data from the comScore MobiLens service on Tuesday. The reporting tracks key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry over the three month period between September and December 2009.

The report highlights the leading U.S. original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and smartphone operating system (OS) platforms based on their share of current mobile subscribers age 13 and older. Motorola was named the top handset manufacturer with a 23.5% market share whilst RIM stayed on top of the smartphone platform market share with 41.6%.

Although RIM remained top smartphone OS in the US the Canadian wireless device company"s market share slipped by 1% from previous figures. Microsoft"s market share also suffered in the three month period between September and December 2009 with the software giant losing 1% market share. Palm also lost just over 2% of their market share in the same period.

In contrast, both Apple and Google gained market share in the months leading up to the holiday season. Apple sealed a gain of just over 1% taking them to 25% of the US smartphone market share. Google"s Android OS was up nearly 3 percentage points to 5.2% , a significant rise that has doubled their market share in the U.S.

A total of 234 million people age 13 and older in the U.S. used mobile devices in December, said comScore.
