Microsoft is improving SharePoint in a big way

SharePoint seems to be the center of Microsoft"s software improvement efforts lately, which is understandable if you have a look at the comments section of our relevant articles to see how displeased customers are with the software overall. Fortunately, Microsoft is making some big adjustments to some aspects of SharePoint in the near future.

In a very recent entry to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap tagged under the ID 500870, Microsoft has revealed plans to offer an updated document library experience on SharePoint. The aim is to bring the UX closer to OneDrive, its dedicated file storage repository hosted on the cloud. This means that you"ll soon have access to custom views and filters, just like OneDrive. In addition, the command bar will be redesigned to enable quicker access to actions, and view customization tools will be clubbed under a single simplified menu so that it is much more convenient to organize your data and folders.

It is important to note that while the overall UX will become more like OneDrive, Microsoft isn"t doing away with the unique capabilities that SharePoint already offers in the document library, those will continue to live on.

We don"t have a mockup or screenshots of the design revamp yet, but we can expect to get more information closer to the actual release date, which will fall around November 2025. It will be rolled out to all customers on the web, including worldwide standard multi-tenant, Government Community Cloud (GCC), GCC-High, and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

That said, do keep in mind that just because an upcoming feature has been added to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap does not mean that it will necessarily land in the specified time frame, or even see the light of day. A recent example of this is an upcoming feature for Teams that would have allowed Copilot to see recorded screen-sharing sessions, now delayed to August 2026.
