Many organizations use SharePoint to manage content and files hosted on their private network, such as HR policies, websites, and other enterprise data. It is an especially common intranet platforms for companies which are already well-entrenched in the Microsoft ecosystem. Such customers will now be pleased to know that the Redmond tech firm is modernizing some aspects of this utility.

In a blog post, Microsoft has announced that it is making the header and footer of SharePoint sites more modern and customizable to stay compatible with the growing needs of its customers. The firm believes that this revamp aligns with modern design standards, improving aesthetics, and making the experience more immersive for site viewers.

New features are split into two categories, those meant for site owners and those meant for site viewers. Starting off with the first role, we have the ability to add background images in headers and footers, while also being able to set overlay colors that are applicable on all layout types. Additionally, fonts can be chosen from a predefined set of families to align the title text, navigation links, footer name, and footer links with your brand's identity. Finally, footers can not be aligned to the left, offering more flexibility, depending upon your preference.

Viewers will, of course, be able to experience all the changes listed above as long as site owners apply them. But, in addition, they will also notice that the command bar is hidden / collapsed in view mode. This offers a relatively more immersive and clean browsing experience, free from distractions.

For those interested, this feature is being tracked as ID 489225 on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap. It is scheduled for release for all customers on the web in late August 2025, with the rollout expected to be fully complete by mid of September 2025.
