Microsoft says USB Type-C Surface dongle will be out later this year

With the launch of the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro in May 2017, Microsoft disappointed some by not including support for USB Type-C on their new devices. The firm offered an olive branch to users, promising that it would be releasing a USB Type-C dongle by the end of last year.

However, as we head into April of 2018, Microsoft has yet to release said dongle, having missed its deadline by a fair bit. The USB Type-C dongle would have made use of the Surface Connect port and provided support for USB Type-C accessories. For users of modern Android phones, this would mean being able to share accessories between their PCs and smartphones.

The firm confirmed in a statement to the Verge that it would in fact still be launching the dongle, with a spokesperson saying that it was "on the roadmap for later this year."

USB Type-C support is a feature of many modern flagship laptops, with Apple making the controversial decision to make use of only Type-C connectors on its MacBook and Google adopting it on its Pixelbook.

While Microsoft does support Type-C on the Surface Book 2, the firm was expected to extend support of the new connector to older devices as stated above. With Microsoft kicking the can down the road yet again, the exact cause of the delays remains unclear.
