Microsoft sold around 10,000 KIN devices

Rumours continue concerning Microsoft"s KIN sales numbers.

Early estimates suggested the software giant had only sold 500 of the devices. John Gruber, a blogger notorious for his inside information on Apple, claimed Microsoft sold 503 devices. "I can’t vouch for the following, but a well-placed little birdie told me over the weekend that they sold a grand total of 503 Kins before they pulled the plug. 503," he wrote in a blog posting recently.

It turns out that Gruber and many critics were wrong about Microsoft"s KIN sales. Thanks to some great detective work from Pocketnow.com, we can confirm that Microsoft has sold approximately 10,000 KIN devices. KIN registers its Facebook app on Facebook, where you can list the total number of monthly active users of the application. The KIN Facebook app is only available on KIN devices and can only be used by accessed by those with KIN devices. At the time of writing the application has 8,810 monthly active users.

The KIN was only known by it"s codename, "Project Pink", until a few months ago when it was unveiled at a press event in April of this year. The device is based on the Windows Phone 7 framework, and was aimed at teens and young adults in their early twenties, but failed to gain traction amongst users in the US after launch - it received only mediocre reviews, and was only available on select plans which were unpopular because they were expensive. Microsoft announced the death of the KIN devices last week.
