Minecraft Dungeons II is in development, and it's out this year

While it didn"t reach Minecraft"s own best-selling game in the world level, Mojang"s Minecraft Dungeons from 2020 was a pretty massive hit on its own. The dungeon crawler spin-off from the sandbox behemoth focused on action gameplay and cooperative play with some use of procedurally generated levels. After years of rumors, today at Minecraft LIVE, Mojang confirmed that a sequel is officially in development.

The teaser did not give much information about the project, unfortunately. There wasn"t even a snippet of gameplay to be seen. The studio asked players to wishlist the title, with store pages set to go live today across PC and consoles, to get the latest details and release information when they go live.

"That"s right, Minecraft Dungeons II is coming this year," said Jens "Jeb" Bergensten at the tail end of the Minecraft LIVE show. You"ll visit never-before-seen locations, battle new foes, and do your best to save a world in crisis, alone or with up to three friends."

Despite some criticisms for being too simple, one of the biggest draws of the original isometric perspective game was its accessibility, offering a quick pick-up-and-play experience for anyone. Check out the announcement trailer below:

For those unfamiliar with the series, it plays out like a simpler version of games like Diablo, where players head into dungeons to fight mobs, grab loot, avoid traps, defeat bosses, and get out. After multiple major updates and DLC packs, Minecraft Dungeons received its final content update back in 2022. The experience turned out to be a big hit, with the Microsoft-owned studio saying that it had reached over 25 million players in 2023.

Minecraft Dungeons II is coming to PC via Steam and the Xbox store, as well as Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also land on Xbox Game Pass on day one. The game has a pretty broad 2026 release window attached to it.
