OnePlus 7 launches with a Snapdragon 855, a 48MP camera, and stereo speakers

OnePlus held a launch event for its 7 series of products, and, depending on your region, it had a lot to show. The most widely available device is the OnePlus 7 Pro, but the company also announced a 5G variant of that smartphone for the UK. To round out the smartphone announcements, there"s also the OnePlus 7, the cheapest of the 7 series family.

The OnePlus 7 features a design language much more similar to the of the OnePlus 6T rather than the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it does include many of the new improvements of the larger sibling. It comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, as well as up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. It also has the same RAM Boost feature for improved performance. It also has a 6.41-inch display, but it doesn"t have the 90Hz refresh rate of the 7 Pro.

Not only that, but the OnePlus 7 also gets the stereo speaker setup, just like the 7 Pro, and the camera on the back has been significantly upgraded over the 6T. It has the same 48MP main sensor as the OnePlus 7 Pro, as well as a secondary depth sensor for portrait shots, so you won"t get the telephoto and wide-angle capabilities of the more expensive phone. Over on the front, though, you get the same waterdrop notch as the OnePlus 6T, instead of the new motorized pop-up shooter.

There are, of course, some compromises compared to the 7 Pro, but the OnePlus 7 packs some significant improvements over its predecessor. Thanks to some of the cut corners in comparison with the Pro model, the regular version starts at £499, or around €559, for the model with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. If you want the 8GB model with 256GB of storage, that will cost you £549, or €609.
