OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Health, a private space for wellness and medical advice

People around the world use ChatGPT for a wide range of purposes. With more than 800 million weekly active users, its use cases vary significantly. Based on de-identified analysis of ChatGPT interactions, OpenAI found that over 230 million users ask health and wellness–related questions on ChatGPT every week. To better serve this large audience, OpenAI today announced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience focused on health and wellness.

Instead of relying solely on user prompts, ChatGPT Health can connect with popular medical records and wellness apps like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal to retrieve accurate and personalized health information and provide better, more accurate responses. For example, ChatGPT can understand your recent test results and doctor reports and suggest a better fitness routine or even choose better insurance plans.

The ChatGPT team clearly mentioned that this new ChatGPT Health experience is designed to support the existing medical care system, not replace it. It can help users get prepared for important medical conversations with doctors based on their medical history. Since privacy is paramount when it comes to health data, ChatGPT Health operates as a separate space with enhanced privacy from other ChatGPT experiences.

OpenAI also explicitly mentioned that conversations in this new Health experience will not be used to train their foundation models. Once ChatGPT Health gets rolled out, when users start a health-related conversation in ChatGPT, they will get a suggestion about moving to ChatGPT Health for the above privacy protections.

ChatGPT Health is now available as an invite-only experience. Users can sign up for the waitlist here. OpenAI"s plan is to provide access to a small group of early users to gather feedback and further refine the experience. Users with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom can sign up for the waitlist. Once the early access is provided, users can select ‘Health’ from the ChatGPT sidebar menu.

After improving the experience based on the feedback from early users, ChatGPT Health will be made available to all users on web and iOS in the coming weeks. It is important to note that medical record integrations and some apps are available in the U.S. only.
