Opera GX is finally making its to way to Linux

The Opera GX team has announced that it is "working on" a native Linux version of the web browser. Opera GX was launched back in June 2019 as a web browser for gamers. At first, it was only available for Windows users, but a macOS version followed in December that year.

Linux is usually the last platform on the minds of many developers, likely because of its small user base on desktops, but it"s still a welcome development nonetheless, especially when you consider the fact that users have been requesting a Linux build for years now. The browser had about 34 million monthly active users as of early 2025.

As for what makes Opera GX a "browser for gamers", the browser features a gaming-inspired design with customizable themes, complete with Razer Chroma integration.

Its main draw is the "GX Control" panel, where you can set hard limits on how much CPU, RAM, and network bandwidth the browser is allowed to consume. This prevents the browser from hogging system resources while you have a game running, acting sort of like a gaming mode. It also has built-in integrations for platforms like Twitch and Discord directly in the sidebar.

Over the years, Opera GX has gotten updated with some unique features, like a "Panic button" for when you need to quickly hide your activities. Introduced in December 2023, hitting F12 mutes all tabs and opens a new, safe window.

More recently, in May 2025, it gained multitasking tools like split view and tab islands for grouping tabs together. And of course, AI (powered by Google"s Gemini) was integrated across Opera"s browsers last year, letting you do things like summarize pages or get information from videos.

Speaking of Opera browsers, Opera One, the company"s main browser, recently got its first feature update of the year. The R3 update took the split view feature and expanded it so you can arrange up to four tabs on one screen.

It also improved its tab islands feature by letting you rename and color-code the groups. The update also lets you access Google services from the sidebar and comes with a few new themes to personalize the look of the browser.
