Remedy is remaking Max Payne 1 and 2, Rockstar is publishing

In a surprise announcement, Remedy Entertainment has revealed it is working on remakes of the original Max Payne and its sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Rockstar Games, the current owner of the IP and developer of Max Payne 3, is partnering with Remedy to publish the title.

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser in a press release. “We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

According to the developer, the two games will be melded into one experience for this remake. The Northlight game engine, the same one used for Quantum Break, Control, and the upcoming Alan Wake 2, will be what"s powering the remake project. Rockstar is fully funding the development budget, and the output is expected to be a AAA experience.

The massively popular and iconic third-person action series began back in 2001, with a follow up, The Fall of Max Payne, appearing in 2003. The games follow the explosive life of Max Payne, a former NYPD detective trying to solve the mystery behind his family"s murder. The games" neo-noir atmosphere, storytelling methods, and hugely popular bullet-time action has made them classics loved by many.

It will be a while before we get to see the project in action though, as Remedy has said it is still in concept stage. Once ready, the project will reach PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
