Rumors of a new Switch model emerge again, reportedly coming in Q1 2021

Rumors about potential new models of the Nintendo Switch seem to pop up fairly often, and a lot of speculation and reports floated around last year, which culminated in the release of the Nintendo Switch Lite, as well as a new standard Switch with improved battery life. Rumors went quiet for a while after that, but it seems like the rumor mill is starting up again.

According a report by Taiwanese website Economic Daily News (via Video Games Chronicle), a new model of the Switch is set to enter production in the fourth quarter of this year, with a release set for the first quarter of 2021. The report cites sources at manufacturers for multiple components of the Switch, including the flash storage and the Joy-Con controllers.

As to what will be new in this model, it doesn"t seem all that clear. All that"s said is that it will include improved interactivity and a better-looking display. It"s not known what this improved interactivity could mean, and these two improvements seem somewhat minor for a revision coming four years after the original Switch, especially with a minor revision already out of the way.

Of course, there could be more to it, and the purported launch is still far off. There"s also a good chance that plans will shift, as Nintendo has faced a lot of uncertainty in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, it"s almost inevitable that a new Switch model will arrive at some point, based on Nintendo"s history with console revisions. Earlier this year, with system update version 10.0, some users found references to a potential new Switch model.
