Samsung details some HDR10+ Advanced specs that takes on Dolby Vision 2

Samsung this week at IFA Berlin announced HDR10+ Advanced, the next major upgrade to its high dynamic range (HDR) format that is designed for next-gen premium TVs. With this, such TVs should become capable of producing extreme peak brightness and colour depth.

The company demoed the technology on its 115‑inch Micro RGB LED TV that it showed off earlier this year. Those at the spot reported deeper contrast, richer colour, and greater image depth compared to when the TV was running HDR10+. From the timing it seems like a response to Dolby"s introduction to Dolby Vision 2 that happened around two months ago.

Samsung told ERT Magazine in a briefing that the HDR10+ Advanced picture standard brings some cool new features like AI-powered tone mapping, genre-based optimisation, Intelligent Frame Rate Conversion (FRC), and Adaptive Gaming features. With its new Extended statistical metadata, Samsung says TVs will be able to interpret tonal nuances more precisely, while new algorithms dynamically enhance brightness and colour.

If you recall, with the launch of the original HDR10+ standard back in 2017, the South Korean giant moved from static to dynamic tone mapping to improve colors, contrast, and brightness.

Another headlining feature is the new HDR10+ Bright mode that will support displays with peak brightness of up to 5000 nits and offer the full (100%) BT.2020 colour gamut. And the new Genre mode will let content creators embed metadata specifying whether a title is sports, drama, or news, enabling displays to apply tailored tone-mapping curves.

Meanwhile, Intelligent FRC can adjust judder cancellation strength by segment, depending on content type and ambient conditions. If you are wondering about Gaming features, HDR10+ Intelligent Gaming support is said to adapt tone mapping for cloud-based titles in real time as it will factor in room lighting, among other things. This likely draws inspiration from the HDR10+ Adaptive standard that the company launched in 2021.

ERT expects HDR10+ Advanced to debut on Samsung’s flagship TVs in 2026 right after more details about the feature are shared at CES 2026.
