Samsung's "unbreakable" smartphone panel survives six-foot drops without damage

It has happened to all of us at some point or at least someone we know. You"re having a good time and then you accidentally drop your phone. This may be followed by a moment of sheer terror when picking it up, hoping that your display hasn"t shattered to pieces. Samsung could put an end to this kind of dread with its newly developed smartphone display.

Along with being "unbreakable", Samsung Display"s new smartphone panel has just been certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Not only will this display be important for smartphones, but the firm also anticipates that there will be a need for this kind of technology with displays found in vehicles, military devices, portable gaming consoles, and more.

Samsung Display was able to make the display a reality by developing "an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it". This is quite different from what is currently offered, where most displays have a glass film, which is usually what cracks on impact. According to Hojung Kim, who is the general manager of the Communication Team for Samsung Display:

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass”

The UL has backed up Samsung"s claims as it has "passed the rigorous real-time durability test that is based on military standards set by the U.S. Department of Defense". The display managed to survive being dropped 26 times in succession from around four feet without any damage. The display managed the same results from nearly six feet as well.

Samsung did not announce when this display will be found in its handsets but hopefully, it will be soon.
