Skate early access lands next month for free, coming 15 years after last entry

It was over five years ago that EA announced that a brand-new entry into the Skate franchise was in development. Since then, EA spun up a new studio to specifically develop the new game, gave early looks at the experience, and even ran a long-term playtest initiative to tune the gameplay. Now, the project finally has a release date, with developer Full Circle today revealing a September 16, 2025, launch for the early access version.

As previously announced, the new Skate (stylized as skate) will be a free-to-play title, letting anyone jump in and experience the game with others in massive sandbox environments with full crossplay.

"Set in the vibrant city of San Vansterdam, skate. is a multiplayer skateboarding destination offering a massive open world where players discover unique skate spots, land insane tricks and connect - or compete - with friends online," said the developer, describing the brand-new skating sandbox. "With four unique neighborhoods - Hedgemont, Gullcrest, Market Mile and Brickswich - each offering its own distinct vibe and challenges, the city is a huge playground for skaters."

The Frostbite Engine is powering this entry, the same one that runs the Battlefield games. With it and the new Flick-It trick system, the developer says it can deliver precise controls for players for their skating journey. Aside from classic tricks, "wallies, slappies, and firecrackers" are some of the new ways players will be able to show off their skills. A new built-in Skatepedia will offer exact methods on how to perform each trick, too.

"skate. is not just a return, it’s a complete evolution of the franchise that’s built to last," said Mike McCartney, Executive Producer of skate. "Our goal with skate. is to capture the freedom, creative expression and community of skateboarding, and share it with as many people as possible. From day one, our priority has been to honor the legacy of the franchise while pushing it into a bold new future - one built in partnership with our players."

Outside of skating, the world can be explored using the off-board controls the studio has implemented. This lets players freely roam around the map while customizing it using ramps, rails, benches, and more options. There will also be rotating challenges to complete, as well as group events.

Skate will launch into early access across PC (Steam, EA Play, and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 on September 16.
