The mystery "special announcement" that Team Cherry teased a few days ago has delivered exactly what most fans expected: a final release date for the highly anticipated Metroidvania experience Hollow Knight: Silksong. The title will be here just two weeks from now, landing on September 4, 2025. Check out the brand-new release trailer above, which houses a whole lot of gameplay featuring the new protagonist.
Taking the role of the Hornet from the first game, the title will have players risin through a haunted kingdom to reach its peak. The sequel touts a whole range of acrobatic moves to get past enemies and the hostile environments, as well as over 200 new foes to defeat with their own attack patterns and movements. Over 40 boss battles have been confirmed today as well.
"Bound by her lineage and guided by echoes of her past, Hornet will adventure through mossy grottos, coral forests and shining citadels to unravel a deadly thread that threatens this strange new land," says Team Cherry, describing the new protagonist"s motives. "Hornet must master a whole new suite of powerful moves to survive. She"ll unleash devastating attacks, learn incredible silken abilities, and craft deadly tools in order to overcome the kingdom"s challenges."
Six whole years have passed since the original announcement of Hollow Knight: Silksong by the small studio, which had first begun development as an expansion to the original game before expanding in scope.
In an interview with Bloomberg, the studio says that the long wait had been due to it taking the time it needed to make sure the end product is a finished and polished experience, and not due to any mismanagement issues.
"Even at that point we were recognizing that it was going to become another giant thing to rival the scale of Hollow Knight or probably exceed it," Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson said. "And then because of how we work, obviously the world ended up being just as big or bigger. And the quest system existed. And the multiple towns existed. Suddenly you end up six, seven years later."
Hollow Knight: Silksong is slated to launch on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the Switch 2. It will also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release on all supported platforms.
