The Callisto Protocol is free to claim on the Epic Games Store today

The eighth day of the Epic Games Store"s mystery giveaway promotion has arrived, and it has begun a giveaway for The Callisto Protocol. Breaking the indie games streak, this comes from AAA publisher Krafton. PC gamers can grab the newest drop and keep it forever if they claim it before the next freebie appears tomorrow, December 25.

Developed by Striking Distance Studios, The Callisto Protocol lands for survival horror fans. The game is set on Jupiter"s moon Callisto sometime in the future, where the Black Iron Prison has been set up. The story follows Jaboc Lee as the protagonist, a starship captain who is falsely imprisoned on the moon before a mysterious illness sweeps through it, transforming its inhabitants.

The title was developed as a spiritual successor to the fan-favorite Dead Space series. Its creator, Glen Schofield, also serves as the director of Callisto Protocol, with some gameplay themes carrying over from the classic EA franchise.

"The Callisto Protocol challenges players to master a thrilling blend of hand-to-hand and ranged combat, including a unique gravity weapon once used by Black Iron guards to control the prison population," says the developer, describing the combat. "Players will be forced to get up close and personal with their grotesque opponents, hacking off limbs, blasting off legs, and getting creative with whatever is at their disposal to survive each life-or-death encounter."

The Callisto Protocol is free to claim on the Epic Games Store for the next 24 hours. As the special holiday promotion continues, nobody outside of Epic Games knows yet what will be available next time. The upcoming mystery freebie will reveal itself and unlock for all PC gamers at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, December 25.

So far, the store"s offer has given away Hogwarts Legacy, Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, Eternights, Blood West, Sorry We"re Closed, Paradise Killer, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to keep for PC gamers. The event is set to run until December 31 with a fresh giveaway every day.
