Ubisoft isn"t finished with its Avatar game Frontiers of Pandora just yet. The 2023-released open-world action game from Massive Entertainment has already received two story expansion packs since its launch, continuing the story that"s loosely tied to James Cameron"s Avatar movie franchise. Today, Ubisoft announced a third expansion for the game, and it seems to be integrating more with the next movie.
Coming with the name Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes, this expansion will be set only a short time after what will transpire in the upcoming third James Cameron movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash.
"From the Ashes is set in a ravaged and occupied version of the Kinglor Forest, which includes a new sub-region, The Ravines," explains Massive Entertainment creative director Omar Bouali while speaking to IGN. "It mirrors the themes of the film as it sees the RDA ally with the Ash Clan, fierce Na’vi warriors who thrive on chaos and pain as they intensify their efforts to eliminate threats to their regime. So, whilst the film and expansion are set in different regions of Pandora, there is some shared DNA and we’ve worked closely with Lightstorm to ensure both pieces of Avatar media are complimentary."
The new Mangkawn Ash Clan will be making appearances in both the movie and the game, who are allies of the antagonist RDA human forces. The expansion will have players taking the role of So’lek, a brand-new protagonist from the Trr’ong clan. Following an attack that wipes out his family, So’lek is said to be hunting the humans and their allies for revenge.
"There’s also one very special creature that will appear in both our game and Fire and Ash that we’re very excited for fans to discover," added Bouali. "So yes, without revealing too much, it is a process of strong collaboration and we each have been able to share and contribute in an organic, complementary way to ensure fans get an authentic and consistent experience across both the expansion and film."
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes is launching on December 19, 2025, the same day that the movie Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters. The expansion will cost $19.99 to purchase across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Ahead of the expansion, the game is also receiving a third-person mode and New Game+ as features for free.
