Upcoming Galaxy S10 models might record HDR videos, sport vast camera improvements

Though we aren’t too far from the launch of Samsung’s next-generation flagship Galaxy smartphones, information does not seem to stop leaking about the devices and the purported features they will come with. Be it leaks in full showing off the lineup, near-final official renders giving a full view of the devices or leaks pointing at possible specs through benchmarks, a lot is already our of Samsung’s bad with regards to the devices. However, a lot about the camera prowess of these handsets wasn"t known, which seem to have also been let out of the bag thanks to code found in the Android Pie based One UI software.

The code points to some significant improvements to current capabilities, in addition to new features that will make it to these devices. Some of them include higher-resolution super slow motion capture for longer duration, a Best Shot feature that snaps a picture when the camera detects that that it can get a good shot, added functionality to Live Focus, native document scanning support, HEIF format capture support, improved scene recognition and suggestions, improved flaw detection and scene optimization, a ‘Super steady’ video mode, and more.

Super Slow Motion debuted on the Galaxy S9 series and let users record videos at a whopping 960 frames per second, albeit for a very small duration of 0.2 seconds at a 720p resolution. Though the S9 wasn’t the first device to shoot 960fps video, the capability was further enhanced with more options through an update. However, the S10 might improve on the super slow-motion resolution, providing the option of shooting at 1080p resolution for longer durations. It may also include a mode that optimized the recording for low-light conditions.

Other additions such as Best Shot will help users take a picture at the right time by automatically capturing the picture when it detects that subjects in an image are aligned perfectly, negating the need to align the camera and then possibly losing the frame while trying to hit the shutter. Live Focus, the mode that helps add a bokeh effect to pictures, might be receiving additional effects such as Mono, Color Point, Blur (standard blur effect), Vintage, Zoom, and more. These effects might be similar to iPhone’s Stage Lighting.

Of the list that leaked, one of the more significant additions would be the ability to capture HDR10+ videos, though it isn’t clear yet what resolution or frame rates the videos would be captured in. This also hints at the device sporting an HDR10+ certified display for playing back these videos. This feature, coupled with the possible ‘Super steady’ video mode, might prove to be a huge upper hand in comparison to its rivals.

Other leaked features include ultra-wide angle video recording and improve scene optimization capabilities for this mode, which could possibly be exclusive to the S10 and S10+ models owing to the rumored third ultra-wide angle camera. The devices might also come with support for HEIF format.

As always, it is entirely possible that some of these features might not be ready for prime time, and may not even make it on day one, so it is best to keep hopes in check. We will know more about the devices on February 20, so stay tuned for our coverage.
