Volume wants to be your holographic device of choice, despite its big price tag

Looking Glass introduced new holographic device dubbed ""Volume".

Virtual reality and augmented reality have made quite a few waves within the tech world. Devices like Microsoft’s HoloLens, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR promise to bring new experiences by enhancing our immersion in entertainment, but also assisting in a range of applications from academic research to engineering.

On many platforms VR and AR has just started being embraced by developers, and the public seems to be showing a keen interest in the new technology.

Looking Glass announced their own take on holograms today, with the introduction of "Volume". The developers behind Volume hope to introduce users to a new way of experiencing holograms without the need for any type of eyewear or headset.

It is a slightly clunky device that promises to bring a “true 3D” interactive experience. The company utilizes a technology they call “lightfolding’”, where over a million points of colored lights are projected through a glass volumetric display, creating an interactive image. The device somewhat appears to be a total evolution of the Overhead Projector, without the awkward laminated sheets.

That said, Volume offers a 120-degree field of vision from the front and back of the panel. It is unclear at this point who the target audience is, especially due to the steep price point - the device will retail for $1000. However, it will be interesting to see where this technology is heading.
