OK I took screens of KAV6, uninstalled it, then installed AVS and took screens.

Here are the differences:

post-22482-1154963998_thumb.jpgpost-22482-1154964015_thumb.jpg

Differences:

Under Protection, Web Antivirus and Proactive Defense have been removed.

Differences:

Rescue Disk options have been removed.

Differences:

Trusted Zone settings and Settings Manager have been removed in Protection tab.

Options for Web Antivirus and Proactive Defense have been removed under Protection tab.

Options for Network Settings and Appearance under Service tab have been removed.

post-22482-1154964546.pngpost-22482-1154964556.png

Differences:

Options for MS Outlook / The Bat! support, and options for connectivity options have been removed under the Mail Antivirus settings.

EVERYTHING else in the program is the same. Well, albeit the icons, and the help file and all that jargon, replacing names and pictures...etc.

Take note of the fact that AOL's product is built off of KAV 6.0.0.299, while the newest KAV is 6.0.0.303 (I am using 6.0.0.300 in the pictures).

Side notes:

I went to this site with KAV6 and got a warning about an adware in something in the page...one of the yellow alerts: http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:rX-rA...t=clnk&cd=1

I did the same page visit while running AVS and got no warning whatsoever.

This proves that Web Antivirus was in fact removed, as opposed to being just hidden.

Ditto for proactive defense. I did some stuff on my machine that normally would warrant proactive defense in KAV yelling at me. Not the case with AVS.

AVS also comes includes with AOL Security Toolbar. Its a nice little piece of software. I think its kinda neat.

AVS, like KAV, places the AVS icon in the upper right corner of the screen during the logon and logoff screens.

AVS, like KAV, shows two processes in the Task Manager for avp.exe.

AVS, like KAV, has windows which are not resizable.

AVS, like KAV, comes with an option in the right-click context menu for an on-demand scan on a file or folder.

AVS, like KAV, has a system tray icon which changes to show different statuses..."updating", "scanning".

I'm surprised AOL decided to go with KAV. Didn't think they knew anything about AVs.

They arent ONLY in kahoots with Kaspersky.

AOL Safety & Security Center, which is an integral part of AOL Total Care (the product to go against all those security suites from MS, Symantec and such), is built off McAfee Security Center, using McAfee AV, McAfee Firewall, McAfee antispam, etc.

Run AWAY!!! Run AWAY!!! *Screaming* This sounds very very fishy since it is a direct (complete) copy of KAV.

Hey dope, have you ever heard of being a company partner?

AOL licenses Kaspersky Antivirus, and provides a rebranded version of it. Kaspersky still gets paid, and all license keys still have to be confirmed through the Kaspersky server.

You get an e-mail from AOL with the license key, you enter it into the program and then it CONTACTS KASPERSKY SERVER to activate the program.

Get your facts right.

Besides, AOL isnt the only one to license KAV. Go get out F-Secure. They license KAV too.

I'm surprised AOL decided to go with KAV. Didn't think they knew anything about AVs.

So are you the authority they should have contacted for an AV review then? Just because AOL spoiled its reputation by bad marketing doesn't mean they employ dumb asses.

Actually by looking at their software until recently you would think they did (or... releasing search data anyone? Who's bright idea was that?). Though in all actuality this probably was all marketing. Kaspersky probably offered a better deal than McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro. Kaspersky knows they have a long way into breaking the U.S. consumer stronghold so why not make some cash on the side from people who wouldn't have bought their software anyways? Kaspersky also licenses their engine out a lot, including to some budget third-party companies. You can find some in the budget bin at retail stores based on the older engine for around $10.

Nod32 is a great program, calling someone dillusional because they like it more just makes you look like an arse. Both have benefits over the other. Both are light. Kaspersky has quicker definition updates yet Nod has better Heuristics. I use Nod32 and would recomend it any day.

Tokar, I saw you hyping AVS/KAV and dissing NOD32 (and it's users) at BetaNews like you are doing here.

Are you a brainwashed AVS/KAV fanboy, or are they paying you to hype AVS/KAV on every forum?

*puts arms out straight and walks like zombie, teetering from side-to-side*

Yessssssssssssssssssssss to booooooooooth...

pssh posh...i know when a software is better than another.

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
