Active Virus Shield - Free KAV!

Recommended Posts

Anyone know how long this is going to be free for? A half-year, year, or forever... maybe?

The license is for 1 year.

It seems you can sign up infinite times...however I dont think you can compound licenses.

We will have to see in 1 year what AOL decides to do...

What I would suggest is check back once a month and see if its still free. If it is, get a new activation key. The new key will provide the extra month.

Everyone who wants to use this should have a carefull look at the license agreement...

Why, what's wrong with it?

EDIT: Well I found this over at ZDNet:

While AOL doesn't ask for money, Active Virus Shield users have to agree to let AOL and its partners deliver ads to them. "As a condition for your use of the software, you agree to receive promotions and periodic e-mail messages from us and our affiliates," according to the fine print in the license and user agreement of the software.

Active Virus Shield collects a host of information that may be used for marketing purposes, starting with the e-mail address required to download and run the product, according to the fine print. Other data collected include usage stats, responses to ads and details about the PC, according to the AOL agreement.

Sorry to have to bring up this thread again, but would it be worth it to use this instead of McAfee VirusScan 2006?

Personally i don't think is a good ideea. Yes it's a Kaspersky product but is very ''slim'' stuff, so stay with McAfee or get another av like NOD or the free AntivirPE.

It's basic but it's got all the necessities--real-time scanning, heruistics, etc... what's in McAfee that this doesn't have? I heard Kaspersky's detection rate is better....

damn, AOL will kill KAV

And how is this?

I really doubt this AOL thing is the same as KAV.

There's no such thing as a free...

Well get used to it. Alot of AOL's stuff is going free now.

And yes, this is KAV just "rebranded" so to speak by AOL.

I don't think so

-No Web AntiVirus

-No Proactive Defense

Also I don't think this aol av is running the same KAV engine core

No, it is the same KAV core. Just a slightly older engine core (I think)

And hey, for free people can do without the features missing. It's still an awesome product regardless. I mean it still has realtime protection, what more do you really need?

Yessssssssssssssssssssss to booooooooooth...

pssh posh...i know when a software is better than another.

...and we all should listen to your "authoritative" opinion. You are spreading FUD like a boy without backing anything up.

This is, people like you don't realize that the main threat nowadays are zero-day vulnerabilities, and you need the best PROACTIVE solution to detect them. While Kaspersky beats all other AVs in signature detection, nothing beats NOD32 in advanced heuristics, which is, I stress it just for you, is more important today.

KAV and NOD32 are both premier products on the market and do an excellent job, and just because KAV has signature detections for 20 year old DOS viruses doesn't mean it's better - those type of viruses usually don't compromise modern systems, and if you want a DOS AV, NOD32 has a special version for that.

KAV has made great progress (I remember how much it sucked when it was in v4, NOD32 v.1 wasn't much better), so did NOD32, and both of them have their strengths. My advice is: use KAV on a production machine that receives files, etc. from the outside (because of better signature detection) and NOD32 - on the machines that are constantly online (because of better heuristics).

What's new in Active Virus Shield

Active Virus Shield ensures protection from not only known, but also from unknown threats; it provides you with full protection. The multifaceted defense covers all channels for data transmission and exchange. The flexible settings for any program component lets users maximally adapt Active Virus Shield to their specific needs. Unified configuration for all the protection components is also built-in.

Let's take closer look at the new features in Active Virus Shield:

New Protection Features

* Active Virus Shield combines traditional antivirus defense methods with the latest detection technologies to provide dependable protection against viruses and malicious programs, stopping them before they can infect your computer. It uses a heuristic analyzer that can detect various types of malicious programs. In doing so, a history is kept, thereby supporting a rollback of the system to the state prior to the malicious activity.

* An advanced File Anti-Virus technology is used: now you can lower the load and increase the speed of file scans. iCheck and iSwift help achieve this, along with only scanning new or altered files. By operating in this way, the program rules out repeat scans of files that have not been changed since the last scan.

* The scan process now runs in the background while you work. A scan can take up a fair amount of time and system resources, but the user can perform his work simultaneously. If any operation requires system resources, the virus scan will be paused until that operation is completed. The scan then resumes from the point where it left off.

* Scanning critical areas of the computer, which could lead to serious consequences if infected, are set aside for a separate task. You can configure this task to run every time the system is started.

* Protection of mail on the user's computer from malicious programs has been significantly improved. The program scans e-mail sent on these protocols for viruses:

- IMAP, SMTP, POP3, regardless of which mail client you use;

- NNTP, regardless of the mail client;

- MAPI, HTTP (using plugins for Microsoft Office Outlook and The Bat!).

* Special plug-ins are available for widely used mail clients (such as Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, and TheBat!) that can configure mail protection directly in the mail system from viruses.

* The user notification function includes events that arise during program operation. You can select the method of notification yourselves for each of these events: e-mails, sound notifications, pop-up messages.

* The program has self protection technology, protection against remote administration. Password protection program settings help keep malicious programs, malefactors, or unauthorized users from disabling protection.

New Program Interface Features

* Active Virus Shield interface makes the functions of the program simple and easy to use.

* When using the program, it regularly provides you with helpful informative messages, with comments and tips, on the level of protection. The product also includes a through help section.

New Program Update Features

* Active Virus Shield watches out on its own for new updates and program modules necessary for its operation. Updates are automatically downloaded as soon as they are available and the software can connect to the internet.

* Only updates that you do not yet have are downloaded from the update site. This lowers the download traffic.

* The most effective update location is dynamically determined, and is used as the most preferred location for future.

* A user can choose not to use a proxy server, if the program updates are downloaded from a local source. This noticeably reduces the traffic passing through the proxy server.

* The program has an update rollback feature that can restore the last working version of the threat signatures, if, for example, the files are damaged or there is an error in copying.

Thanks !!

# Web Antivirus component scans all web traffic for malware and network attacks (using advanced SafeStreamTM technology) and ensures high productivity and optimal protection during Internet browsing.

# Kaspersky’s patented proactive protection detects even the most recent (previously unknown) threats, detection for threats that have not yet been entered into the anti-virus signature databases.

network attacks are unheard off on a home user and rootkits etc detected after defintions are updated. + without proactive defense this should be easier on resources. now all i need is a good enough free firewall :)

edit: After a quick look @ wilderssecurity - Comodo firewall is what i've decided on. finally i can safely remove mcafee internet security crap that came with my internet connection.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
