Ghostbusters 3 (Rumours and Discussion)

Recommended Posts

Who you gonna call? Columbia Pictures has apparently heard the fans call for a third film in the horror-comedy franchise GHOSTBUSTERS as they have finally, finally set the long-gestured sequel in motion. Even though a script is being written with the intent of bringing back all four original busters, the article reports that reaching an agreement is still going to be a factor. Read on for the story and watch for updates as soon as a draft of the screenplay is delivered.

Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster "Ghostbusters" franchise.

The studio has set "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.

The scribes just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.

"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then "Spider-Man." An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage. Sources said so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment.

No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.

The scribes, who are Emmy- nominated for their work on "The Office," just set up another picture at Columbia, selling their spec script "Bad Teacher" to the studio for Jimmy Miller to produce.

Please be true...... maybe this is why they delayed the game.

This will probably end up just like before. They have already had two other scripts one written by Ramis and they all feel flat. I will believe it when it hits theaters.

Filled with such optimism aren't we? :p

I am truly excited about this!

They only fell flat because Bill Murray didnt want to come back, theyve all lent their voices to the game, maybe they enjoyed it so much they want to get back together for a film.

Hell yeah

I don't think they're up to much atm, I don't see dan akroyd in much and I think harold ramis writes more than anything else.

Ramis' scripts for the office were some of the best episodes.

This would be awesome, but I hope they don't screw it.

They are better to kept Ray Parker Jr's music....

I've been playing the theme song all morning. My boss wants to kill me 'cause he's got the theme stuck in his now and has been whistling it all morning

I dont have the mp3 but ive been singing it in my head for past hour :(

Considering the writers are from The Office, I doubt we'll see more horror.

They are only able to write one style of comedy then?

Do no one except me know they been planning this for some time now?

Wow you're so leet! It states they have planned a film for a long time, but never got past deal stages! Reading FTW!

I never said they could only write one style did I? I just stated that I doubt they'd write more horror. Look at what they've done before.

Lee Eisenberg - Adventure | Comedy, Comedy | Drama, Comedy, Comedy | Short

^ Never written horror before.

Neither has Gene. So most likely they'll stick with the same genres they're familiar with.

I have never been a fan of changing characters in a franchise, but as much as I loved the original cast - they all are sort of old. I wouldn't mind a new cast as long as it didn't become too cartoony and still contained original aspects of the film. If they redesign the proton packs for example or added pointless nudity like they did in the dukes of hazard remake, i would be upset. Writers completely killed Knight Rider with that bull**** car .. for example.

Fair comment, and I apologise for putting words into your mouth. But don't writers work to the brief given? If they were briefed to write a horror commedy - would they not be responsible for doing that?

I think we hold onto details a little too much sometimes - possibly its part of what we call nostalgia. See, the way I see it, times change, designs of the hardware would probably be revised or even scrapped for better hardware. Plus let's face facts - CGI ability changes.

That said, if they kept the same hardware, but we saw different CGI for the "beams" then yeah - needless. Better rendered CGI fine, but don't needlessly change it. Plus I still wanna hear that hum... "Doh, Ray... Egon!".

Plus - with reference to Knightrider: I think the new car will actually catch on. I kinda like it - that said, I love Mustangs!

No need to apologize :)

Most studios search for writers based on what they're good at (until the writer(s) is the one who initiated the film first (like Saw)). Most writers have a comfort zone (genre) that they write in and don't stray outward. A comedian doesn't typically switch to horror. Take for instance Two and a half Men's writers wrote an episode of CSI earlier this year and it kind of bombed because they tried being funny and it didn't work.
