Ghostbusters 3 (Rumours and Discussion)

Will Rick Moranis Return To Hollywood For ?Ghostbusters III??

Last month, Harold Ramis told MTV that the old crew from ?Ghostbusters? has been abuzz with plans to reunite for a long-awaited third movie. Sigourney Weaver said she would be ready to return, and Bill Murray suggested bringing on a new female Ghostbuster. Now, in addition to provoking hopes for the film, Ramis? words are sparking unexpected predictions that the original cast members from the first two movies will be on board ? including mostly-retired actor Rick Moranis.

?Everybody said they?d do it,? Ramis told Entertainment Weekly, who listed Moranis alongside Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray as locks come back ?They?ll be looking at younger actors [for the lead roles], I?m sure. But we?ll be in it as mentors or advisers.?

Moranis cited single parenting responsibilities for his turn away from Hollywood. The Canadian actor wished to dedicate more time to his children following the loss of his wife to cancer more than a decade ago.

Having left his mark on ?Saturday Night Live? with his SCTV-created character (and ?Strange Brew? star) Bob McKenzie, Moranis appeared in the first two ?Ghostbusters? installments as the nerdy would-be hero Louis Tully.

Bringing Moranis out of retirement would be a notable accomplishment for the project, saddling him with his first live-action role since the 90s. His return would surely be welcomed, though. No one in the history of the franchise has been able to handle a Proton Pack with quite the same calamitous finesse as Moranis.

A local band around by me have recorded a "theme tune" for the third movie. Take this with a pinch of salt as the band "pumps" is a side project or their normal band, which appears to be more about comedy than music. (There's a bit of fannying around at the start).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc27u-_m8q4

Either way the tune sounds pretty good and I'd like it to be the official tune

First time i heared it i was disgusted and hated it, then i found myself humming the rest of the day, the more i listen to it the more i like it.

The singer is a tool though.......

What we know so far: Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are writing a screenplay for Ghostbusters 3, which will bring most of the original cast members back in a mentor capacity, and introduce a whole new generation of Ghostbusters. Harold Ramis insists that ?everybody? from the film?s original cast will return, but some, like Sigourney Weaver are still hesitant about returning. Dan Aykroyd teases a few new details in a chat with

?There will be a whole new generation that has to be trained, and that whole new generation will be led by an individual who you?ll all love when you meet him but I?m not going to tell you anything yet,? teased Aykroyd. ?They?ll be lots of cadets, boys and girls, who?ll be learning how to use the psychotron, the accelerators and all the new stuff, the neuron splitter, which is going to be the interplaner, interceptor and all these great tools that they?re going to have, to flip from dimension to dimension.?

on to dimension.?

It sounds like the Ghostbusters won?t just be passing the torch over to a new team, but possibly training a larger group? I might be reading too much into what Aykroyd said, specifically the phrase ?lots of cadets?. But it definitely doesn?t seem like there is just one or two new members, but instead an large group.

Dan Aykroyd says 'Ghostbusters 3' may start filming in winter

I just visited with Dan Aykroyd over at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip for an interview for an upcoming feature in the Los Angeles Times (you'll be able to find it here on the Hero Complex as well). We talked about a wide range of topics, but I didn't want to wait on this update about the third "Ghostbusters" film, which is moving forward after so many years.

Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. Murray's presence was the pivot point in making a third film happen. He holds a one-fifth controlling interest in the property rights and has been seen as the most reluctant to return to the paranormal comedy. Aykroyd said that is true but that it's more nuanced than the public portrayal of the situation.

"I don't put not making the third movie on Billy. We can't do that. I've been very busy. Harold's been busy, Ivan's been busy. And a third script really didn't coalesce properly. And Billy, you can't blame an artist for not wanting to do the same thing again. He did two of them, for God's sake. Although I'm the biggest cheerleader as the originator of the concept but I've never begrudged Billy not doing a third movie. I never said he held it up or that he refused. Hey, listen, he's an artist. You can't force somebody into it. I'm sorry he never read my third draft because I thought it was pretty good but, look, now we're at a point that there's a story that he can accept and that's going to work, and I think we're going to be in production fairly soon. We could be in production by winter."

The script is by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the writing team behind the upcoming Jack Black/Michael Cera movie "Year One" (directed by Ramis), and Aykroyd is enthused about its premise of a new generation of Ghostbusters taking over the duties of the aging team. Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two "Ghostbusters" films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This." "He has a lot of things going on, but it would be wonderful to see him do it."

Aykroyd says he believes the movie will move forward but that he has also learned that "at any second everything could blow up." The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

Who does Aykroyd think would be good in the jumpsuits? Aykroyd mentioned two names, Alyssa Milano (who is a voice in the upcoming "Ghostbusters" video game) and Eliza Dushku. "I think they're amazing," he said. "And I'm excited about the whole idea of getting this done."

Isn't Ramis fat now and Bill kind of old? it would have to be them coming out of retirement or being washed up, or passing the trade to a younger gen I would think... IF they are in it.

If it's them "passing the flame" then I don't want to see it. Those 4 are damn near LEGENDS in my mind, and them passing it would have to be an AMAZING movie, or will leave me with a sour taste.

It would be like the TMNT's training a new squad or something.

I don't care, as a hardcore ghosthead, I will love to see the original 4 (or 5 if you include Louis) strap on the Proton Packs again. It'd be an amazing feeling on the big screen and then you would feel something special. After all those years, this should be the last one. They will put their packs on. One. Last. Time. Heat 'em up.

Yeah would be awesome!

Speaking to the Guardian Guide, a pull out supplement that comes with every Saturday?s issue of The Guardian newspaper here in the UK, Dan Aykroyd has revealed even more details of the upcoming third Ghostbusters film.

Here?s the big quote from the man himself, detailing some of the new ideas we can look forward t There?ll be a whole new generation that has to be trained and a leader that you?ll all love when you meet her. There?ll be lots of cadets, boys and girls who?ll be learning how to use the neuron splitter and the inter-planet interceptor - new tools to enable them to slip from dimension to dimension.mension.

I?d imagine this female leader would be the role Aykroyd has previously expressed (a personal) interest in the casting of Eliza Dushku and Alyssa Milano for. You can infer from the comment that we?ll ?all? love her that she?s probably not going to be a shrinking violet.

As for the gadget, to me this inter-planet interceptor brings back memories of Aykroyd?s own attempt, a few years back, to mount a third Ghostbusters film. Here?s Aykroyd?s own explanation of that old idea, as reported I wrote a script called Hell Bent, Ghostbusters go to hell basically. The premise is that it?s Manhellton. There?s Manhattan and ManHELLton. And if you can build an inter-dimensional phase system so that you can go from one dimension to another. We?ve succeeded doing that and we go to the hell side.at and we go to the hell side.

Back to the new approach, and Aykroyd also mentions that Bill Murray?s condition for returning was that Ernie Hudson?s previously underwritten role as Winston Zeddemore would be beefed up to put him on equal footing with the others. A class move, Mr. Murray.

Aykroyd also notes to the Guide reporter that

I have what I think are two great cool science fiction stories myself right now and I think I?m gonna skip the movies altogether and find some gamers, maybe go with these guys again. I?ll just give them the scripts and say, ?pretend this movie got made?.nd say, ?pretend this movie got made?.

Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have been writing the new film - and judging from his comments, sharing every draft with Aykroyd. Production is apparently possible for the end of the year, so a Summer 2011 launch isn?t too unlikely.

ah.. so the new leader is a She? Very interesting. Mad props for Murray to recongize Winston (err Ernie Hudson) for an equal role! Afterall, he is now, one of the best, the beautiful, the only, Ghostbusters. :D

Ivan Reitman Thinks It's the Right Time for Ghostbusters 3

One person we haven't heard much from regarding the new Ghostbusters 3 is the man behind it all, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original two movies. However, SciFi Wire finally caught up with Reitman recently during a promotion for the re-release of Ghostbusters on Blu-Ray. Beyond just being a producer on the sequel, Reitman thinks the time is right to bring back the franchise anyway. "There's something in the zeitgeist of the world right now that it feels appropriate. There are some very talented people writing the screenplay. All of our fingers are crossed." We're all hoping for the best as well, as no one wants this ruined.

Reitman also answered a few questions briefly on Ghosbusters 3, starting with how it all came together. "I actually think the combination of both the Blu-Ray release and the new game sort of awakened the thirst of at least the creators of the movie to start to rethink of it more seriously, the possibility of a sequel. It's something that's been sort of dormant in our minds, really, for the last 10 years or so, and there have been two things that sort of told us, 'Wow, people still seem to be really interested in this story and the characters in this story.' More importantly, it sort of reawakened the joy of working on this film in both iterations."

Despite all that joy, though, there is plenty of a fear, not only amongst all of the fans, but even Reitman himself is a bit worried. When asked what his hopes and fears are, this is the optimistic answer he gave.

"The most important thing [is] we don't want it to be a disappointment to the people who have sort of taken this very much to their hearts. I feel the responsibility as the producer and director of the original in a very legitimate and real way. It was hard enough to do that sequel, but I think the time is kind of right. I just sort of felt it lately and said that to Columbia, so we've started this journey. The most important thing is that the script is good. I think we can find actors who can join the original group of actors to make something special of it."

I actually think it's great to hear that Reitman is so supportive of Ghostbusters 3. If you look at something like Terminator Salvation, which didn't ever really get the blessing of its original creator James Cameron, the end result wasn't very well embraced, even moreso because it turned out pretty bad. Thankfully this already on a different path, which may mean better things in the end. We've heard plenty about the story and the younger cast (including that Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku are Dan Aykroyd's top choice), but it's a relief to actually hear from Reitman. Here's to hoping it stays true to the spirit of the original movies. (First Showing)

Ghostbusters 3 Round-Up - Including First Line of Dialogue?

Interest in Ghostbusting is at fever pitch, and the imminent launch of the original Ghostbusters film on Blu-Ray and the tie-in videogames must have something to do with it. All the same, genuine interest in the franchise is as high as any time in the last 20 years, at least, and stories revolving around the upcoming third installment are piling up thick and fast. After the break, a few bullet points that should bring you up to speed and, most excitingly, a look at what appears to be the first dialogue exchange from the next movie to become public knowledge. I?ll also toss in a fantastic rumour I?ve been hearing, but haven?t been able (yet) to substantiate. What fun would leaving it out be, though?

* The screenplay by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitksy still hasn?t been delivered yet, but is imminent. A running-draft or treatment has been at least shared with Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis because they?ve gone on to discuss it with the rest of us (see below, for example).

* Ivan Reitman has told MTV that, actually, he?s willing to think about directing the next Ghostbusters film. Aykroyd had previously named Ramis as his pick to take the director?s chair if Reitman was ?too busy?.

* A five-way jury hold veto over any Ghostbusters film. Reitman is one party, three more are Murray, Ramis and Aykroyd, and the fifth is Columbia Pictures. If any of these want to nix the project, they can. It seems this would also apply to films that the individual would not be involved in - say, if Reitman wasn?t set to direct, or one of the actors not set appear, they could still wield the axe.

* I was sent an e-mail from a source inside the industry who wanted to relate a little Ghostbusters 3 gossip. According to them, Jake Kasdan wants the directing gig. As in actively wants it and, I would assume, is pursuing it. If the job was mine to give, I?d be putting a bow on it for him now.

* Empire magazine published the following passage in which Harold Ramis appears to share the first line of dia I?m intrigued by my idea for where Egon has been. He?s been working in the International Institute For Imaginary Science, in Geneva. He?s evolved a post-rational, non-conclusive logic for dealing with problems of chaos. Someone asks him ?What does that mean?? and he says ?There are no spatial, conceptual or intellectual models to describe it - so we don?t know.? Egon?s gone so abstract, even he doesn?t know what he?s doing!he doesn?t know what he?s doing!

* In the same article, Aykroyd says that ?hopefully [Alyssa] Milano will be playing the same character she does in the game?. That?s Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn, who they describe as a ?love interest?. That he then mentions Eliza Dushku, directly after this, suggests that they would not be competing for the same role.

Of the 6" and 12" figures from Mattel weren't cool enough, Toy Fair Magazine (issue #144) made the discovery that Mattel has more tricks up their sleeve. Arriving in October is the "Logo Ghost", a 3-D plastic look at the Ghostbusters logo that stands up next to the figures. How do you buy it? Oh, it's FREE of course, when you purchase the Ray Stanz figure this fall. He comes with a stand for posing. Egon Spangler arrives online and at the San Diego Comic Con next week, with Winston hitting stores in December. Winston comes with a trap rocking light effects. Nice!
