Hey Chris, Jeff here with the Windows Outreach Team. I?ll let others on Neowin comment on how Windows 7 Beta is running on laptops, but I just wanted to point out that if you want to try out Windows 7 in its current Beta state and have not yet downloaded the Beta, you will not be able to. The download was pulled a few hours ago. Win7 RC1 will be out eventually if you want to try it out before the final version is released for purchase.

Best,

Jeff

Works on my Toshiba Tecra A2 (oldish) Intel Pentium 1.5GHz with 1.25GHz ram perfectly fine, except the graphics card runs in "default driver" mode which means no Aero. But that's no big deal.

Runs smoothly, fast and no performance degrade.

well, that's kinda why I was asking. to see if anyone has been testing Windows7 on a laptop

From your first post Chris I thought you were saying you wanted to put Windows 7 in its current (Beta) stage on your laptop and PC but weren?t going to do it for a few months. My bad for the confusion. I try to leave opinionated discussions up to those in the forum and stick with addressing more objective issues regarding Win7. Anyways, thanks everyone for being Beta testers. I am glad to see it is running well on your laptops.

The 32-bit build runs fine; 64-bit not so much thanks to Dell not providing 64-bit drivers for this laptop.

+1 (N) I hate this too.. have a 64 bit processor on my Dell Vostro and it took me a while to get all the drivers when I switched to Vista x64.. Dell didn't have all the drivers so I had to visit manufacturer's websites to get them and some drivers are there on Dell's site but not properly arranged e.g. I'm using XPS "Sigmatel C-major" sound drivers for my Vostro as the sound card is the same but in compatibility info on Dell website Vostro is not added to the list!!

Oh and updating BIOS on x64 is a pain too as the BIOS update does not support Windows x64.. so had to make a bootable Windows PE USB drive and update BIOS through that..

Anyways.. I didn't try Windows 7 yet.. waiting for RC or final version.. anyone tried it on Vostro 1000?

Running it on a laptop here. Much faster than Vista. Several bugs, though.

What kind of bugs? Could you please provide some examples?

I am currently using Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite P105-S6024 and it runs fine. It came with Windows XP Media Center Edition and even has the Windows Vista Capable sticker on it.

Mobile DualCore Intel Core Duo T2050, 1.6 GHz

2 GB (DDR2)

Mobile Intel® 945 Express Chipset Family (128 MB)

On my laptop I have not run across any major issues I can think of right now. It runs better than Vista did on it. Although not all the drivers Windows 7 had worked. A couple of the drivers I had to get from Toshiba for Vista. On one of my desktops I was having an issue with one of Sony's Media Managers converting videos, but that's about it.

I just wanted to note that the only issue I had experienced running Windows 7 on my Dell XPS M1330 has now been resolved: UPEK has released compatible fingerprint scanner drivers for Windows 7! I can finally make use of that fingerprint scanner on my notebook, and now that the "Biometric Devices" is built right into Control Panel, I find that the scanner integrates much better into the OS. I have no problems logging on and approving UAC prompts.

    • Web search has been one of those crap ware that I try to get rid of asap. It's annoying and slow. It was a cheap way for Microsoft to drive traffic to Bing.
    • All I can say is that think the USB G8 is better in many ways, and costs the same or slightly less. I wouldn't part with mine. It's even a big improvement over the G6 USB. (You can also use studio phones (up to 600 OHMs I think) with the G8, but I have to say that even relatively cheap 30-50 OHM phones sound absolutely great--far better than through most internal motherboard sound!) Considering the difference in these products I am surprised that Creative is still making the PCIe internal card versions. https://www.headphoneer.com/cr...ve-sound-blaster-g8-review/
    • I missed this when you first posted it, but those are awesome icons! I would normally prefer things to be uniform, but each of those icons seems to fit perfectly for the game! If I may ask though, what was your thought process on which icons are circular - MK makes sense - and which ones should be rectangular or square?
    • What I like about Paint is using it almost exclusively for cropping and resizing images I get elsewhere--it's quick, easy and cheap... I keep it glued to my taskbar, in fact. Also, the clipping tool comes in handy, as well (hit print scrn on the keyboard and it activates immediately.)
    • I still remember it fondly today. It was so cool to work in 64-color Half Bright mode and 4.096-color HAM mode (interlaced) when x86 was still in 4-color CGA or 16-color EGA low res. C= never realized what it had until it was far too late--the failure of C= was the failure of its top management. The C= Amiga was 20 years ahead of its time, I always thought. It didn't hurt that in only 512k of chip memory, the Amiga could preemptively multitask when Apple was still doing gray scale graphics on tiny screens and along with everyone else was doing cooperative multitasking (running more than one app at a time in resident memory, but you could only run one of them at a time--had to manually switch between them.) I had a ball with AREXX scripting running between programs that had AREXX ports so that when you sent other applications data and instructions, those running applications could process the same in real time to output! Memories...
