I got it to last a lot longer by refreshing the page like 4 times just before it swtiched to BW.

So our photoreceptors care about differences in signal then, and they become desensitized to differences after a period of time. If you move your eyes and expose non-(de)sensitized receptors to the black and white image, the effect disappears.

I got it to last for about 3 - 4 seconds if I put my nose up against the screen.

Lasted until the image reverted back, sitting about a foot from the screen. If you look away from the dot, it goes away relatively quickly. Keep focused on the dot and the colors stay.
