David Fincher is reportedly circling the English language adaptation of the first installment in Stieg Larsson's best-selling "Millenium" series, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo."

Already adapted into an award-winning Swedish language trilogy, the English-language version is being produced by Scott Rudin at Sony with Steve Zaillian ("Schindler's List," "American Gangster") adapting. It's development seems to making progress with the studio also reportedly having an actress on top of its wishlist for the role of the Lisbeth Salander, a socially-awkward, computer hacking genius: Carey Mulligan. Though no deals have been made yet, Sony is apparently very happy with the work Fincher has done on "The Social Network," itself an adaptation of a Ben Mezrich book.

Fincher has already ventured into crime-thrillers, of course, with "Se7en" and "Zodiac" but had previously shown an interest in returning to the genre with an adaptation of "Torso" that had Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Rachel McAdams attached. Whether Larsson's worldwide literary hits are the re-entry point into the genre Fincher was after remains to be seen.

The project, which is loaded with franchise potential, is predicted to spark a lot of interest. The lead male role of womanizing journalist Mikael Blomkvist has also been linked to George Clooney though that seems to be more internet-casting than anything substantial. Having said that, we'd take a Fincher-Clooney-Mulligan project any day of the week.

Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish-language take on "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" meanwhile hits theaters March 19th.

Carey Mulligan set to become Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

FOR Carey Mulligan, who sprang to fame last year in the hit British film, An Education, Hollywood has come knocking. She is set to play Lisbeth Salander, punk heroine of the bestselling thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Mulligan has won the approval of David Fincher, the director, and also the family of the late Stieg Larsson, the Swedish author who created Salander. The choice follows weeks of casting rumours, with producers sifting through nearly 5,000 potential candidates.

Hollywood insiders say Mulligan can expect to be paid up to ?10m for the three films covering Larsson?s Millennium trilogy, which has sold 1m copies in Britain and 25m worldwide. This will make her one of Britain?s best-paid actresses.

Mulligan, 24, was nominated for an Oscar and won a Bafta for playing the perky schoolgirl Jenny in An Education, the script for which was adapted by Nick Hornby from the memoir by Lynn Barber, the journalist.

Mulligan has made no secret of her desire to play Salander, a fierce ?biker chick? computer hacker who helps an out-of-luck journalist investigate a long-missing woman in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the first book in the trilogy.

?I am obsessed with those books,? she said last month. ?I would love to do them. I am not going to lie about that. I would love to play Lisbeth Salander.?

Since then Scott Rudin, the Hollywood producer who shared an Oscar with the Coen brothers for No Country for Old Men in 2008 and been nominated for 13 other Oscars, has won over the family of Larsson, who died in 2004. They had been wary about the prospect of a Hollywood film.

?They now understand what kind of film he is making and they like Carey,? said an industry source last week.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has already been filmed in Swedish under its original title, Men Who Hate Women, with Noomi Rapace, a stage actress, playing the bisexual Salander. It was popular in Scandinavia but its subtitles have prevented it becoming a mainstream hit in America, where it opened last month.

The new version may be relocated to Canada as a compromise for American audiences. It will not reach cinemas until all three books have been turned into Swedish-language films by the team behind the television hit Wallander.

The final decision on casting will be made soon by Fincher, director of Fight Club, Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He has been talking to Mulligan?s representatives at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles, which has been seeking a ?breakout? role for their young British client.

?Carey has proven she can do sweet and tough in An Education,? said a CAA executive last week of the film in which Mulligan played the young Barber as a na?f swept off her feet by an older conman.

?Now she wants to do something bigger and bolder, without becoming a comic book heroine. This role will make her a household name.?

Brad Pitt for 'Dragon Tattoo' remake

Brad Pitt is said to be "a strong bet" to star opposite Carey Mulligan in the US remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

According to IndieWire, Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin are eager to move forward with the project, which is based on the first book in Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millennium Trilogy and the Swedish-language thriller released earlier this year.

Should Pitt commit to the movie, it will reunite him with his Se7en director David Fincher. Johnny Depp and George Clooney were actors previously mentioned in connection with the role.

Oscar-nominee Mulligan is thought to have already secured a three-film $15 million (?10 million) paycheque to play a bisexual computer hacker who teams up with a disgraced journalist to investigate a decades-old disappearance case.

Schindler's List screenwriter Steven Zaillian is currently working on adapting the novel for the Hollywood revamp.

Adaptations of Larsson's trilogy have already been completed in Sweden with original stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist returning for Dragon Tattoo sequels The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.

Daniel Craig in Talks for Lead!

Though Sony says there is no offer on the table, an insider confirmed that the studio has begun talks with Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace) to star in the Hollywood adaptation in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Craig, who is about to start shooting the sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens for Dreamworks, would play journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The news was first reported by The Wrap.

Craig?s schedule is clear now that the next James Bond movie has been postponed indefinitely due to MGM?s financial woes. Tattoo is an adaptation of the first book in the best-selling Millennium trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson. David Fincher is set to direct to film and is said to be high on Craig. The two are expected to meet in Los Angeles in the next few days.

I hope Daniel Craig gets it.

ComingSoon.net has confirmed that Daniel Craig will star in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on Stieg Larsson's posthumously published crime thriller trilogy, "The Millennium Series." The deal includes two sequels based on The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest.

Adapted by Steve Zaillian, "Dragon Tattoo" describes the mystery surrounding the long-unsolved disappearance of an heiress. Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig), recently dinged by a libel case, and young female hacker Lisbeth Salander try to resolve it, stirring up bundles of personal and industrial corruption along the way. The role of Salander has not been cast yet.

Scott Rudin is producing "Dragon Tatoo," which Columbia Pictures will release on December 21, 2011.

Director Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish adaptation of the book, starring Noomi Rapace, has earned an impressive $101.7 million worldwide. The follow-up, The Girl Who Played with Fire, has taken in $54 million so far. The third installment, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, has not been released here yet.

Craig is currently filming Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens.

There is no way the MPAA will allow for the rape scenes to be in this movie, which become a very prominent plot device in the "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest". Kind of retarded to only show half the plot because your typical mid-western family are afraid of sex but can handle a genocide.

So Daniel Craig, David Fincher and Carey Mulligan! Wow. Will be a great film I'm sure.

should probably mention they haven't cast Lisbeth yet, Carey was up for it but she didn't sign.

After what has to have been one of the most meticulous searches for a female lead in quite some time, director David Fincher has finally chosen his Lisbeth Salander for his American remake/new adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Actress Rooney Mara, last seen in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, will play Salander, a hyper-intelligent hacker who teams up with a journalist to solve the disappearance and possible murder of a teenage girl four decades prior.

Mara will join the previously-announced (and now confirmed) Daniel Craig, who will play the journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Like Craig, Mara is contracted to star in the next two movies in ?The Millenium Trilogy?: The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet?s Nest.

Pretty much every actress in Hollywood under 26 has been after the role of Salander, with actresses weaving in and out of contention for weeks now. Some of names that appeared on the list of contenders included Ellen Page, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Emily Browning, Sarah Snook, Sophie Lowe and L?a Seydoux. The latter three were on the shortlist along with Mara but evidently Mara has beaten out the competition.
