Homeless man finds 7000 euros, returns it to police

Recommended Posts

VIENNA - Homeless Austrian man Hermann Schleichert had 80 cents (one dollar) and an empty packet of cigarettes in his pocket on a cold Boxing Day evening when he found 7,000 euros on the pavement.

But instead of seeing the cash as a late Christmas present, the 48-year-old, who was staying in a Vienna homeless shelter and hostel for recovering alcoholics, took his find to the police, he told the Kurier daily on Sunday.

"I picked up the envelope and saw there was a bundle of cash inside. All 500-euro notes!," he said. "Not even for a second did I think about keeping the money. That would have been theft."

The real owner of the money later reported his loss to police and got his cash back - but is yet to thank Schleichert, Kurier added.

Well honestly, that's very nice of him and hopefully it's from some drug smuggling that way they'll give it back to the person who claims it as no drug smuggler wont go claim it. :D

As for that much cash, I can almost surely say that wouldn't be me turning it in. Call me dishonest or whatever but I found $50 and it made me super happy and helped out my cable bill, can't imagine finding almost $10,000 and turning it in. Maybe i would but it would be pretty tough and i'd probably hate myself after. Just being honest here. LOL

Honesty and reading I guess aren't your strong points. Article says in last sentence what happened to the money.

Yes apparently i didn't read the article () Just kinda had some thoughts rumbling and wrote them down. But yeah, see they claimed it. I know i lost $200 and nobody turned it back in, granted it's not $10K, but i hope whomever found it put it to good use at least. I've probably found over the years close to $200 so guess i paid it back now :)

Which kind of places do monies hang out at? :p

I never find anything... The best I found yet was maybe 5 euros I guess...

Accumulated over time maybe... 10 bucks (probably less!)? :D

Well outside bars or at the mall is basically where i've found money. Found the $50 just walking down a normal street though. LOL (Y)

My GF found 250 German Marks (old german money, equiv to 110 Euro) the other day too. :) in Leipzig so yeah, guess it's not just me.

You'd think the owner of the money would at least give the homeless man a reward. Even 1% of the ?7,000 would have been more than good.

He should have put up a "processing fee" hence returning the money - 10% (usual finder's fee) :p

Who is to say there was not more than 7000 euros originally in it, and he did possibly help himself to some. :shifty:

I guess the guy who claimed it might have said something to this regard, or maybe that is why he didn't offer him any. 'Cause he might have already taken some, so he just kept his mouth quiet and left it at that?

Either way, I can't say I would do the same. Maybe I would, I dunno. Kudos to the homeless man though, that is some pure true honesty right there.

I hope that's the case.

Both nice and sad at the same time. Nice that the man handed the money in (Could have been some old dears life savings. They do love to carry them around for some reason). Sad that he didn't get a reward though.

I'd like to think if I was one of the coppers who took the money in and then handed it out to the rightful owner and knew that the homeless guy didn't get anything I'd give him bit of cash if I saw him after that.

I just remembered I got extremely lucky at the currency exchange once...

I gave the guy 100?, he calculated 200? and gave me the equivialent to that in pounds sterling...

Guess that's good for a few years hehe

Also, this reserved me a front row seat in hell

Really I think this homeless guy at least gets the money. The guy who lost his money is just a selfish brat and this time was just a test. Next time, he's going to lose more and not get any back.

Wow you certainally form your opinions of others without a solid understanding of the situation. There are many potential cases for carrying around a large sum of money. Must you think the worst without getting the other side of the story first?

If it was no big loss to the person, do you think they would of still reported it to the police?

Yes he would. Wanna know why? Because it's not about his condition in life but about his own conscience. Nothing can change someone's conscience and from that story, I can see that that homeless guy was a very honest person. He knows that he might not get a reward for finding this. He could have just kept it. If he kept it, no one will know. But instead, he did the right thing and you should learn from him and stop judging other people like me thinking of what might be true eh?
