IDC: Android tablets will overtake iPad by 2015

They're not center-stage right now, but Android tablets are still predicted to overtake the iPad within the next three years, according to IDC. The forecasters noted that Apple's worldwide share of the tablet market is shrinking with each new lower-priced Android competitor. Even as iPad sales continued to grow in 2011, surging 50 percent between Q3 and Q4, its market share fell during the same period, from 61.5 to 54.7 percent. That gives the iOS slate a weaker lead going into 2012 than suggested by earlier figures. Of course, the iPad remains an individual starlet in front of a troupe of Google dancers, so Apple's position as the upper-most vendor isn't under threat. In fact, IDC predicts it will remain the market leader in terms of revenue beyond 2016, which ought to put some fire in Amazon's belly.

I'd really like to see if Android even exists on tablets by 2015, I'm sure it will be king of phones though.

If "others" is supposed to represent Windows 8 this prediction is laughable at best.

Lulz, of course it will overtake them eventually. I'm sure the market will soon become littered with more cheap crappy Android tablets.

Though they will really need to kick it up a notch since Apple has a massive lead over everybody else.

Its like they are saying Windows 8 isn't gonna be released until 2016.

Pffftt

That... or because there is no sales data for Windows 8, no prediction can be made.

It will still Exist.. and there is no sales data for Windows 8, so no prediction can be made. Others probably represents WebOS (which I know is going to be gone), QNX, Windows 7, and other proprietary OS's.

There shouldn't be this kind of prediction in the first place.

Everyone knows how Windows 8 will be pushed into Tablet market. Not debating the fact that they succeed or not.

That graph looks like its made by Schmidt himself.

Why shouldn't there be a prediction?

For all we know Windows 8 will flop, or it could succeed big time. Until it is released there is no way to tell. However, I find it interesting the trends and how they are going. And I know that 2016 will not look like the chart says it will, but following the rate at which things were in 2010, and 2011, it is cool to see their predictions.

there shouldn't be these kind of prediction because you didn't like it??? shows how fan boyish you are to MS..

if there is a prediction about how well windows 8 would do when it is released you would be all over it, wouldn't you???

No one cares about what you like or dislike.... these are predictions so deal with it...

Android phones may have better hardware i.e Samsung Galaxy SII but no one can beat the software Apple produces.

I quite prefer android over iOS any day of the week, month, year, decade, etc. All day long at that.

The software on my Desire HD is slightly better than that of my iPad.

I suspect we can replace Android with Windows 8 there. Not that many people will choose Android as a brand over Apple's offering, but Windows is likely to be a whole different story. My impression is that Android is a largely invisible product to the ordinary and people like makes of phone, whereas Windows is instantly familiar.

That ain't the point.

We, no one, can ignore the importance of Windows 8, and yet, the graph simply ignores it. Completely. Which is rediculous

Agreed and disagreed.

While I am sure Windows 8 will take a huge chunk of marketshare by that time, we simply can't rule Android out of the equation. And as you said, as people get used to Windows 8 on desktop, it is inevitable that they'll prefer the tablet of the same interface.

The thing is that ordinary people do know about Android, but don't know about its cons and limitations. Thats the problem. They see it as a shiny and successful platform, but don't bother to go into the details of it.

Thats why Android will always be there. It will lose the marketshare once Windows 8 is out, but it will still hold its own ground

windows 8 isn't that important. the world isn't yearning for a new windows OS. it's not like we are stuck with vista and the world wants windows 7 NOW. WIndows 7 has been well received and now it's really starting to make an impact in the enterprise. WIndows 8 isn't that big of a deal in the large sense.

8 is not that important at all... No one know how well 8 tablet will sell... its just 8 fan-boys who predicts it will sell well..

with all the metro hates going on i hardly believe it will make a huge dent..
