Also FYI he says his phone is completely stock not rooted at all and the lock screen deactivation is a built in feature he didn't need to root for it (nor is his phone rooted or modified)

Yup,and here is what the screen looks. Just choose none to deactivate the lock screen.

According to HIM

And I'd say a lo of people look at the time in two cities, travelers, businessmen, students studying away from home, gamers gaming with friends in other states or countries....

but not necessarily all who come to the contest..

MS employee: lets set 2 weather details beforehand and make that the competition.

oh yeah smoked... How about i set the rules beforehand like opening 3 cities weather? obviously its me who will be winning

I hate it when people just blindly say that phone is rooted and the lock screen is a 3rd party app not even knowing that it a stock feature of android.

I guess if Windows Phone is their first smart phone there will be a lot of basic things they aren't familiar with like being able to turn off a lock screen? :s

Been saying this since the tests started...like others. This is a gimmick...nothing more. You have an expert on a WP device dictating challenges to a mixture of people including novices. (and sorry, just because you attend tech events, doesnt make you an expert. I am sure a lot of novices took the challenge as well).

Here is an idea....say I am an Nascar driver. I challenge some soccer mom in a race on a track that I choose and we each have to use our own vehicles. I know the track and my car clearly has the advantage since it has been designed ahead of time for this challenge.. Who do you think will win?

Boom. Done Smoked by Still1

The MS store employee was dishonest and got butthurt when it backfired. That was not a speed test, it was all about who had the phone preconfigured for the selected task.

She choosed something that she had already configured her phone to show on her home screen. In the worst case scenario she only had to unlock her phone faster than the other guy, or at least about as fast which would mean he still wouldn't win.

In the best (and most likely) case, the other guy wouldn't have added those two weather widgets to his own home screen and would hence lose.

His phone was jail broken and modded to hell and back only to be fast at this ONE task. It proves nothing except you can mod your phone to make it a weather station able to show weather a fraction faster than a multi purpose phone.

Call me when he can do it faster on a OOB phone.

"Modded to hell and back" when he only removed the lock screen (which is a standard Android feature) and added two weather widgets? Are you serious?

Shame he didn't have Widget Locker installed where he might of had the widgets on his lock screen then it would have only been a press of the power key. Would he still have lost for that?

She had customised her phone to display two weather locations, why can he not modify his to remove the lockscreen? He won, it can be performed quicker on Android that WP7 if set up correctly. They just didn't bet on the guy not having a lockscreen, pay up :)

Oh and also, he might be using third party app for the lock-screen, which obviously disqualifies him. For every OS, there are always two steps to get to homescreen, power button and lock screen thing.

The rules clearly stipulate that any app that is available in the marketplace/appstore is ALLOWED. The disabling of the lock-screen is a feature built-in Android.

You are making excuse for Microsoft; who were beaten in a rigged competition that clearly favored them. Their phones were per-configured to display the challenges, and when this guy beat them they refused to give him his prize.

The article clearly states that his phone was stock android...... The rules also state that any app from the marketplace/appstore is permitted....

^ Also, being able to show weather forecasts also isn't a stock feature of either OS. Both require downloads and setup, so really, all this was a "test" of, was who could display their homescreen faster, and Android invariably wins at that.

If MS tried this shizzle in the UK, the Office of Fair Trading would be all over them like stink on a turd.

you can add anne robinson to that list too. she would publicly hulimiate them on bbcs watchdog show.

its all just a very silly and stupid marketing campanie.is an iphone allowed to "smoke" an windows phone? it just comes down to what hardware you have

and if you happen to have a orange Sanfransisco your not going to win.

You could if you just had widget locker installed, all you would need to do was turn on your phone and there could be two widgets displaying the weather in seperate cities. Also the Orange San Fran also allows you to remove the lockscreen so even that would have won this challenge if it comes down to "steps" as opposed to time, would probably beat it on time too. But any Android phone set up correctly could perform their test in one step.

I tried all the challenges with both my Xperia S and Xperia Arc S, did them together with the videos, and with the Xperia S I won almost always, with the Arc S it was about even. Windows Phone is fast, but really not that fast.

Not through the eyes of a WP fan or salesperson you didn't! Surely you cheated? :p

I've found that the Xperia S is a great performer on what people say is outdated hardware. Seems Sony really have gotten their firmware/software right when it comes to optimzation. Cannot wait for them to release ICS on the handset, although I think as soon as CM9 hits the handset I will be installing that.

I don't think this was a good test Android wins but probably only by a fraction of a second and most people wouldn't disable the lockscreen. The person won but taking off the lockscreen isn't 100% fair, if WP7 had the feature I wouldn't expect them to remove it before doing the tests.

Why not? As standard WP doesn't have 2 weather tiles but they did for this test.

It isn't 100% fair to add two weather tiles to WP and then challenge people to show weather from two locations at the same time, yet they did.

I could place a web widget on my home screen and "smoke" every other phone at showing whatever page I've configured the widget to show. If you can preconfigure your phone any way you want and it's up to you to select the challenge, then it's all pointless.

The soccer mum .... :)

Android user cheated because he didn't tell the lady that he already had 2 weather widgets on his home screen. The windows phone user didn't have it on her home screen prior to the challenge.

To be fair, you should start off clean.....this mean both have to get rid of their Weather widget/tiles and start from a clean slate. This is what the challenge is all about.

Exactly, they had their phone preconfigured to do it as quickly as possible, this wasn't an out of the box default setup test. They had changed their setup and so had this guy, they lost, simple as that.

Pretty bad that they can't admit it and invite him down for another "random" test that they will have a phone preconfigured for in the hope that his phone cannot manage it faster.

Dear god this thread is funny. I love the MS Fanboys you make my morning. Can't stand to see your wittle windwows phwone sweven bweaten by big ole meanie android. But seriously, it was beaten completely fair. If you can't see that, then you need your heads examined.

@Hawkman -> LMFAO BRO! Jailbroken?? AHAHAH Shows how little you even know about android. And that it's modded for the weather challenge?? Are you high?? It's funny you claim that Android sucks and is so poor, yet you really have no ****ing clue do you?

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified.
