I thought MS got rid of sounds to speed up Windows 8.

I don't think they'll have a startup sound by default, Windows 8 is supposed to be all about speed. The startup sound actually slows the startup down, hence lose it.

You should have quick jingle in (U)EFI Mac-style meaning your hardware is "OK", like some other manufacturers already do. After that it isn't really required for a second one from Windows. ;)

This is a terrible idea. I absolutely hate that on my MacBook. At least on my old LC I could stick something in the headphone jack to silence it, but there's absolutely no way around it now.

Guys, just tried The Windows 7 Explorer Wrapper for Windows 8 (made by Tahiy) and mysteriously, after I decided to resume from hibernation I noticed there's a startup sound! It's a nice chime BTW :p.

It does not come with Win8 Explorer... seems it is disabled by default

Try to modify this in regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\BootAnimation\
Modify DisableStartupSound from 1, to 0 and see (hear) if there is a sound or not on startup.

a brand new one would be great.
also a quick animation would be nice too, similar to the xbox 360.

I always disable all Windows sounds after installation, so I didn't notice it until you mention it. But IMO, they should've left the option blank by default for people to add a sound if they wanted to and not yanking it right off.

Every little bit counts. ;) And it is frankly unnecessary.

Exactly - it's unnecessary. I never could really understand the point of a startup sound. I know Windows is starting; why do I need a jingle? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

well, it is a mobile OS in big part... who wants startup sound on their tablet or laptop? don't think there will be on default setting...

All my Androids have a boot sound of some form.
