Memory Timing Question

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if someone can help understand memory timings:

I have 2-2GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1066 and CPU-Z shows 4 different profiles:

Which one should I be using, and what (if any) difference do they make?

Or the calculations and the very straightforward chart here:

What it doesn't mention (at least directly) is voltage. DDR3 standard is 1.5V. Increasing voltage helps to increase stability for higher clocks but also increases heat. Also note that Core i series have memory controller integrated in the processor itself, so it's recommended for it not to exceed 1.65V and not to be more than 0.5V than PCH voltage.

JEDEC profiles tells the motherboard what timings to use for the memory at a given memory speed. You can see what timings your memory is currently set to with the Memory tab in CPU-Z.

Some motherboards will allow you to modify the RAM timings. Some people will try finding the tightest timings to squeeze out the very best performance out of their systems. However, the performance gain is really only realized with benchmarks and not really in real world situations... maybe like 1-2 FPS in games, if even.
