Well technically you can't...BUT, if you are using a Jailbroken iPhone, you can install either the "No Update" or "Software Update Killer" package from Cydia to hide the badges and also disable the check for updates/download updates function.

Boo that sucks. How big are the downloads - aren't these taking up space on my device?

F*ck I hate Apple sometimes.

[...]

With all due respect, this is ridiculous.

If you update iOS it will not take any of the space you can use for App Data, photos, videos etc...

The OS part is installed to a fixed place on the NAND that always occupies the same amount of space.

So if an update makes iOS say... 20MB larger in size, it won't affect your personal storage.

Of cause for downloading this update you need free space, are you really going to complain about that?

Because if.... it needs to go somewhere for temporary storage right?

And it does not auto-download, if that's what you mean.

Also, it only works on WLAN. So please no tariff talk here...

For starters yes that is what i mean, it downloads if you are connected to wireless as you have noted so yes it downloaded while I was connected to wireless. Second of all, regardless of the software being saved elsewhere on my device, that it is still MY device I should control what downloads and what does not. Imagine if all apps started doing that. Your logic is flawed.

Yes, I really am going to complain about any vendor downloading software onto my device without asking me or providing me with a way to opt out.

Thanks for your input though ;) /sarcasm

Just curious. Why don't you just install the update?

I might install the update once I double check that I can still jailbreak that firmware

See this link for info on the release of the iOS 5.1/5.1.1 untethered jailbreak:

So in the case of device firmware (which isn't a ****ing app.)your rather "trust" your own judgement than that of the hardware vendors. Wow, dense much. And this is the exact reason why Android and even WP will eventually fail, they arn't willing to fight the telco's control over a device/os THEY make (OS fragmentation ring a bell, thats the telco's fault not the OS vendor.).

Man what is it with you closed minded people today?

Yes, I would rather trust my own judgement as I know what I have planned for my device. Ever heard of bugs? Ever heard of vulnerabilities. Ever heard of battery drains from certain udpates? Dense much?

Again, just so it sinks in for you.. I would rather no software/firmware be downloaded onto my device until I know it fits within my plan for my device. Not that hard to grasp. People have different ways of doing thing. Get over it.

Geez.

First the update like other have stated only happens on Wifi and even then you have to go in to the update part and click install or download what ever it says. also the Firmware update i installed and sent to a portion of the Nand flash dedicated only for FW updates . and what is it you cant do that you need to JB your device i am just curious

Actually, to those of you claiming that OTA updates aren't auto-downloaded? you're wrong. The 5.1.1 update auto-downloaded to my device, too.

However, unlike the OP, <50Mb of space on my phone isn't making me freak out and write angry letters to my carrier.

Screw it! You've inspired me to reinstall IE5.5 on a Windows 98 Virtual Machine and **** updates! IE6 is a huge memory drain /s

In all seriousness. iOS Updates are done in a similar manor as OS X Updates.

5.x.x = Major Build

x.1.x = Minor Build

x.x.1 = Bugfix Build

Bugfix builds almost never contain new Firmware and only improve upon the latest Minor Build. So updating from 6.1.0 to 6.1.1 will NEVER cause you to have issues like the ones you mentioned.

Never knew that - didn't help when I checked mine and it's asking me to "Download and Install"... forgetting I'm still on 5.0.1.

mmm nup.. don't believe that bcos the latest iOS update has supposedly (based on what I have seen on some twitter posts) to have improved battery life. So that theory is flawed - which I guess is why you said "almost never". If it can improve - it can also have a negative impact.

Anyway i'm over this thread - so many ppl getting upset bcos I want full control over my phone. Like it's some crazy request I'm asking for. I wasn't worried about the size of the download limit at all. It was just the principal of the matter.

I'm out. Carry on amongst yourselves.

    • Yup, broke my comp… again. its times like this when I regret AMD. This just never happens on NV.
    • Huh? You're delusional calling the Steam Deck dead. It is so successful that it has sold out multiple times. Even after the price hike this year it sold out again with 24 hours of being back in stock. The demand is real and has not died down even after four years.
    • Same place "Unreal III" is, in everyone's thoughts!
    • So how much water is used in that "initial charge" and how often will it need to be recharged?
