Google's Nexus 7 Tablet Is Already A Hit!

Google

started taking pre-orders for its $199 tablet, the Nexus 7, yesterday after the product was announced.

At such a competitive price, you'd think it would sell pretty well at first.

It is.

We cornered

Hugo Barra, the director of product management for Android, at a press meet and greet last night to get some insight.

Barra wouldn't give us a specific number of course, but he said the first-day pre-orders were really, really good. When we pressed for a ballpark figure, he gave us a knowing smirk and said "it's big."

Naturally, it's Barra's job to make the Nexus 7 sound like a success. But in this case, we believe him.

Nice, a hit just like the iPad, well not that big.

I wanted to try an Amazon Kindle Fire, but that one is far way better it seems

I'm really interested in a Google Nexus 7"

It may only be 7", but it will get all the Android updates before the other tablets (as long as google supports it).

It also looks to be well designed as well.

Not too surprised; was thinking about getting another budget priced tablet in this class for my daughter.. looks like a better option than the Kindle Fire and Nook. Probably holding off replacing my old one for myself though, waiting for the Surface release.

I can't help it but think they could've spiced the casing a little - as it is now, it looks like a cheap Chinese knock off. No disrespect intended but still.

I'm not surprised. I'm waiting for a reviews to roll in (unless I've completely missed them online), but unless this gets ripped apart I may be getting one pretty soon. At the price that they're selling it, I don't really see much wrong. I was tempted by the Kindle Fire, but we never saw it here in the UK which is a massive shame.

Would love to have a hands on with this.

Since when is simple and utilitarian a "cheap Chinese knock off"?

Because it looks exactly like the many Chinese copies that have been floating around in the past few years - it wouldn't have taken much to make it aesthetically more pleasing for new users.

Now it has a massive bezel that makes it looks like they hacked the product together from some extra parts laying around.

I think you should reserve your judgement.. Reviews that are out and hands on all say that it feels very good the device itself feels high quality.

Engadget gave it almost all positives except the expanded storage via SD Cards.. Their verdict (which is shocking for an Android tablet coming from them)

the best $200 tablet you can buy

PROS

  • Quality look and feel
  • Great display
  • Solid performance
  • Killer price

CONS

  • Limited storage

BOTTOMLINE

Google's first Nexus tablet is a home run, besting the Kindle Fire and handily securing the position of the best budget 7-inch tablet.

I was excited to buy one until they revealed what it looked like. That huge bezel and crappy enclosure turned me off completely.

Sad.

The Verge (Joshua) says:

"Google?s Nexus 7 isn?t just an excellent tablet for $200. It?s an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it?s the first Android tablet that I can confidently recommend to buyers ? and not just because it?s got a low price tag (though that certainly helps). It?s a well-designed, powerful, and useful product, with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is."

"Believe it or not, the last time I was surprised by a product with those same qualities, it was called the iPad."

BAM!!!

The price alone is going to make it sell better then the iPad i belive. The main reason the HP Tablet sold so well during the fire sale was it was under $200. And honestly they need more Low Priced tablets that are not cheap POS's.

Buying one in August to replace my iPad 1. I can see Apple trying to stop this tablet from being sold, cause this thing is going to knock the Apple on it's ass.

These things aren't even in the same category as the iPad. People were saying the same thing when the Kindle Fire was coming out, and it didn't even make a dent. It's not so much about the price, but rather the size and functionality of it. And I just don't think people care for Android on a tablet much.

Too cheap and too low resolution, I'll pass.

low resolution?? I guess you dont know how resolution works.

1280?800 on a 7 inch tablet is approx equivalent to ~1800X1200 on a 10 inch tablet.

Ignore him, hes the kind of person who falls for Apples "magic". Theres no reason to have such a ridiculously high resolution and call it 'retina display' outside of marketing.

Retina trumps it.

For you maybe, but I do find usefulness and several reasons for having a high pixel density.

I don't know, I still think it's going to take a chunk out of Apple.

So basically it's on par with the iPad then. :p

Yeah you want to feel good for blowing that much money on a tablet.

I'm actually hoping it does. The tablet market is so one-sided right now, that we as consumers really need some competition to fire up.

Having no SD support is a bit of a bummer, but it seems to be the way the tablet market is headed these days. Besides I only had an 8GB card in my Desire HD before I sold it and I never came close to filling that up so 16GB would be fine for my needs.
