In the past few days, MS had been trying hard to fix the bug caused by using the intended build No. 8888 as the windows 8 RTM, However, it seems that the effort was in vain.

A while ago, canouna had posted in WinUnleaked about recompiled builds of 9200 appearing, and later VivaHo posted a screen-shot of the MS CorpNet showing the new 9200 builds (with details covered), and commented that it will be available on MSDN on Sept. 1.






I got a anonymous tip-off: The Build 8888 has been voted down, MS has abandoned to use it as RTM, and windows 8 RTM fill be Build 9200.

Hopefully more details will surface as time goes on, and since it is not appropriate to continue discussion in a thread with a misleading title(WZOR claimed build 8888 has been signed-off), hopefully the Neowin Mods will lock it, tks.

We shall see the facts soon, apart from Mary Jo saying that win8RTM will be release to OEM's on Aug. 1, some VLSC accountees also report keys are available, and the software usually will be available 3 working days after the keys.

So cross your fingers and keep watch on the Windows Blog.

MSDN on Sept1? Awww I won't be able to get it for a whole month if it comes to MSDN anytime after Aug 25th. That also seems like a longer gap compared to Windows 7.

How about some last minute changes? I mean it doesn't really take much time or even testing to slip in a new icon pack.

Looks like you are confusing MSDN & MSDNAA.

I'll just wait for official. I really hope we don't have to wait till September for MSDN. I wouldn't have thought they want to get it out sooner rather than later.

I dunno how much testing something like an icon change would take. And why it even needs it. Unless we're testing if people can tell what it stands for etc, but that shouldn't really take long.

Testing is required to see if the symbols actually work at properly representing the task. It took the IconFactory two years to come up with the current Windows Vista set in collaboration with Microsoft. Not to mention the time it actually takes to create them, tweaking etc. Especially when talking about an entire system set.


That said Microsoft completely dropped the ball on this. I couldn't believe Microsoft actually introduced a bunch of new icons in Windows 7 that totally clashed with the remaining Windows Vista ones. Now three years later that same crossbreed set actually lives on in Windows 8, where the two styles clash completely with Metro.

That and Microsoft probably couldn't "afford" the cost of designing new icons (You wouldn't believe what my employer pays per icon).

So, it seems MS had made an effort to fix the QFE restrictions, finally it failed (rumor was that it failed when testing with OEM's), and had no choice but to use the next available number which is a multiple of 100 and 16, i.e. 9200.
