Trenton fire allegedly started by 10-year-old daughter angry with her mothe

TRENTON ? A 10-year-old girl who might have been angry with her mother reportedly set the family?s couch on fire, city fire officials said.

Crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Spring Street on Sunday afternoon upon reports of a fire in a home there, according to Captain David Sabo, who served as acting chief and commanded the response.

?The resident put out some of the fire,? said Sabo. When engines arrived, firefighters removed the couch from the home and extinguished the small fire, preventing it from spreading. The damage was confined to the couch.

Additional engines and ambulance crews responded to the scene after authorities received reports that infants on the second floor might have suffered from smoke inhalation, Sabo said, but paramedics evaluated the children and determined that no one was injured or sick.

Sharule Bowser, a local resident who grew up in the area, said he saw the smoke and ran into the home to alert the residents.

?I had to force them to come out,? he said, adding that the residents had been trying to extinguish the small fire themselves as the smoke thickened inside the home.

Sabo said that police responded to write a report on the incident, and to speak with the girl who confessed to setting the fire.

?It may have something to do with punishment, (her) being mad with her mother,? Sabo said.

Sabo said fire officials will forward the girl?s information to the state?s firestarters program, and her parents were given details on county social services agencies to call for advice.
