he UK’s Department of Education is currently holding a public consultation on parental internet controls, the results of which will influence the coalition government’s decision to implement an mandatory ISP-level content filter, designed to block pornography and other adult content. The consultation ends on Thursday, so there’s only three days left for you to make your voice heard.

The consultation follows Conservative MP Clare Perry’s report back in April, which advises that the government should control what UK internet users can and cannot see online. The report recommends a 12 months timeframe to roll-out an network-level filtering system, which is mandatory for all internet connections, and can only be opted out of by contacting the ISP directly.
“A network-level ‘Opt-In’ system, maintained by ISPs, that delivered a clean internet feed to customers as standard but allowed them to choose to receive adult content, would preserve consumer choice but provide an additional content barrier that protected children from accessing age inappropriate material,” the report concluded.

If it's Opt-In, as it seems to suggest, I don't see the problem.. Most parents don't have the skills needed to lock down their computer..

The problem that I see if this goes through is, what if said parents of children have opted-in, then what's to stop the children from doing the same as they always do on computers with internet.

Once again, the government will not fix things in this manner, it's up to the parents or whoever is running the computer/network to fix the issue and to monitor usage when their children or whoever is using their internet. Education of the masses on how to set up the parental blocks would be a better idea than simply trying the idea of blocking everyone with an opt-in service in my opinion and as such I'm protesting it's use because I find it useless.

Is this an opt-in or opt-out situation? Either way, pointless measure which only creates complacency amongst already lazy and incompetent parents.

Neowin would be blocked as it has pornography available to paid subscribers. So the audience of Neowin would go down as a result of many people here being under the age of 18 or living at home with their parents and unable to convince their parents to opt-out of a porn blocking filter.

Other sites including reddit, wikipedia etc will similarly be blocked because user generated content contains pornography. Twitter would also be blocked as there are many porn stars on there who post fully nude photos to their photo streams.

Do you see the problem now? - Also the porn filter will be on automatically for new subscribers and you'll need to opt out of the filter to gain access to adult content.

More minority politics.

When I was at school as a senior 11-16 (1980-1985) other kids would bring in p0rn.

Flick book Lesbo action, Joy of Sex or some pr0n mag.

You could also reach the top shelf of 7-11 or the local Patels and read pr0n or find them dumped in the street.

I don't do pr0n, it bores me.

Why would I want to watch others doing it when I can do it myself.

I am from the USA but actually think this is a good idea as long as you can still get porn if you really need it. I bet a lot of people who watch it occasionally would be fine giving it up if pushed. IMO the massive amounts of porn on the internet does a lot more harm than good it kind of sickens me I have a roommate who's always watching it purely as entertainment.

The main reason I don't like this is because it seems to label porn as bad and something that should be blocked. Perhaps I could come 'round to agreeing with it, though, but I know I looked at porn before I was 18 years old, and I turned out fine.

The real problem is the age porn is restricted to. In the UK, we're allowed to have sex from the age of 16 but we can't watch porn until we're 18. Does anyone else see the ridiculousness in that? When we're 16, we can have sex, but we can't look down. . . .
