On verge of selling S3 - too much data being used. Help

Recommended Posts

If money is that tight , why spend all that money on decent phone(s), when as you say, you could be spending it on gas ? . Priorities is a word that springs to mind.

GiffGaff is a very good service.I was on o2 for years and made the change. Everything is exactly the same as o2....well apart from costs !!! Join the forum and please ask if you have questions ( Forum members get paid to answer questions).

If you're that skint and unable to upgrade the data plan ,sell the phone and buy a cheaper one as a replacement.

You can get most phones on contract for free these days,

But in the UK, contracts are generally more expensive than pay'n'go so apart from the free phone, theres not much appeal to them

Not sure what its like in the US

Her phone isn't rooted i'm afraid.

Positive. How does she do that?

Also seahorsepip - it says her device needs to be rooted for that. She doesn't want to root.

It's looking like this is going to be an unexplained complicated matter :( Hope we can get a solution as she really likes the phone, but am not getting a good vibe over this one. Nothing seems to be working. Facebook as has already been said - has damn near every auto thing turned OFF.

How about get rid of Facebook?

That would seem to fix the problem.

pretty much the same here, you may have to pay out-right for the phone but $45/month unlimited everything (pay-as-you-go [straightTalk]) is a lot more appealing then $75-80/month for unlimited talk and text but ~1gb data

can't believe this thread is still going... all i can say is get a a nokia 3330 and then you won't have any more Data issues... any SmartPhone will eat data if you let it.. your habits change, you consume data whether you like it or not.. if you can't afford the data costs (due to your contract) then dont buy a smart phone.. or atleast you be SMART about its use... and if there is wifi around USE it.

sorry but this has really got annoyning now.

I only got through the first page, but it's really annoying how half of the responses are people being jerks and insulting the OP.

I really feel like Neowin's degraded into a place for people to come insult people they disagree with.

Rule #1 of any internet discussion forum is you have got to have a thick skin. If you can't take people disagreeing with you and calling you on stupid things you do or say, then you need to grow up. Outside the window of that basement where you play COD is the real world and it ain't all pretty roses and trophies for everyone just for participating.

Well Technique i dont feel your going to get many good responses as you can see we have gone full circle and are now back on pay more for data, ditch the phone and... delete facebook none of which i see are a real answer to your problem if im honest. As i suggested check out GiffGaff there plans are much better imo and like i said they have a good community that responds pretty fast, they did to my questions anyhow.

Oh, if you do decide to change to GiffGaff and take your wifes number with you she may still get messages from o2. After two months i ended up calling them and getting them to remove me from there database (all done over the phone) then had to wait another 30days i think it was for it to take effect. Was going say something else but i forgot... oh yes, if you are going to stick with o2 through Jan then why not reset her talk time counter and what not and see how much she spends during the month and how many minutes she uses then see if you would actually save with GiffGaff? I think most on giff gaff just buy a goodybag and hardly use credit tbh lol i guess i should top up :/ lol

Agreed, but when the person who is asking for help spells it out - deleting facebook isn't an option, paying more for a bigger data plan isn't an option & isn't a requirement ......... and then people CONTINUE to suggest these two things, you start to wonder ......... if people can't read, how were they able to respond?? Why waste time suggesting things that aren't going to get put into place due to not being necessary?

Then people get upset because you've not used THEIR suggestion and accuse you of not wanting help. It's the "hey look at me!! MEMEMEMEME" syndrome where everyone wants the spotlight on them. Sorry, but YOUR (not you ncoday, but people in general) suggestion may not be the best or even correct one, don't get upset if it doesn't get implemented.

Yet you continue to respond...????

If it's so annoying, why not just (hear me out on this one....) NOT open the thread?

When your mouse arrow hovers over the thread then just let it keep moving & don't click. Problem solved.

If you're only on a 500MB plan, why not turn off cellular data and only turn it on when you need it?

You musn't have read the rest of the thread - which will include the NUMEROUS times i've said this has been done
With WiFi all over the place, the only time you'd ever really need cellular data is when you're in the car.

Not everywhere is like the USA. You may have WiFi "all over the place", that isn't the case here.

As was said earlier - there's a place outside the basement playing COD ...... well there's also a place outside the USA - it's called the rest of the world.

I have a pile of sticks and need an aircraft carrier... getting rid of the sticks and/or using any other material is out of the question. I'm also unwilling to buy anything else as well. I need valid options. Go!

The problem is the OP is unwilling to admit he's wrong. We've given him all the valid options, and then some. Most he's unwilling to even try. That's the issue.

totally agree.. loads tried to help, there some very good suggestions in here.

My final suggestion is that he DOES sell the S3 avoid any smartphone and returns to the beloved APPLE ecosystem where he feels performs better, uses less Data and no longer has to pay extra for anything.

Really Tech. that is your only real option now...

and no i for one dont play COD or games... and i use my phone outside of WIFI zone.. infact if you had listened early you know i stream my music on the way to work and home (1hour each way) (over mobile data) i also use Google Maps for my navigation (on occassion) and i still find my 500Meg more than enough.

Happy New Year though... hope you find a solution that works for you.

I fail to see where the OP has failed to try the things suggested.

He said he had turned off celle

Sorry to say your wrong the OP has tried things suggested but the options are very limited and most people are continuing with the same stuff "Delete facebook, Change the phone and pay more for data!" all of which the OP is not willing to do and personally i dont see why someone should be forced to remove an app, pay more or switch phones because of a data cap which is too small. He asked for help and advise but so far all he's had is constant nagging that he should do all the three above, this forum is ment to be a tech site yet none of the responses have been very technical or good imo. Also why should the OP be forced to sell something his wife likes or to remove an app that millions of people use or pay more for data?

Think of it this way you have the internet your service provider has a cap what are your options if your going over that cap?

1. Install an adblocker - Not possible without rooting the phone the OP's wife does not want to do this though i admit it does the phone no harm.

2. Dont use the internet as much - OP is already using the wifi points as much as they can, could they use them more? Possibly.

3. Get a smaller computer - Im saying this because peopel keep saying change the phone i dont really see how the screen size eats more data, though i suppose it could be image loading im not sure.

4. Pay extra for the data - Seriously would you stay with an internet provider thats going to charge you more? No, i personally change providers and thats why im with Virgin internet because they leave me and my excessive downloading alone.

Anyway i could go on and on and on like the energizer rabbit but, im out of this thread now. Its upto the OP to decide what him and his wife want to do but there options are still limited with the options given.

1. Change the phone - Wife done's not want this

2. Pay more for data - Why should they?

3. Remove an app they use (forced)

4. Change networks

5. ? i dunno i can not be bothered to read though again and im watching tv.

I'm not up on the latest phones (I use a LG Viewty Smile  ), but if the wife doesn't want to change phone, doesn't want to pay more, and none of the other options work, I would say go with Giff Gaff.

?10 gives 250 minutes, unlimited text and 1GB data.

?12 gives 250 minutes, unlimited web & texts.

?15 gives 400 minutes, unlimited web & texts.

And if you ring someone who is also on GG, the call is free.

I fail to see where the OP has failed to try the things suggested.

He's already refused to root the phone to install ad blocking capabilities, so that's out. Facebook is using that data no matter what. YOU CANNOT GET AWAY FROM IT. Unwilling to root the phone he has 3 (count them, 1 2 3) options;

1) Don't use facebook

2) Get rid of the phone

3) Get more data (or pay the overages)

He's refused to do any of them... Something's got to give.

I know he's said his wife does not want to root the phone i said that in my post your obviously not reading anything also there are four options not three.

1. Remove facebook - again why should someone be forced to do this?

2. Change the phone - again why should someone be forced to do this? Its means they lose money!

3. Buy extra data - Again why should someone be forced to do this? They can not get "more" data because o2 is limited to 500mb on ALL P&G tariffs!

4. Change network - Look there is a forth option o2 use to be good with tariffs now they are not so good and people are jumping ship to giffgaff.

Sorry to say but every day this site gets worse and worse, people have choices and one of them is to continue looking for a good solution if you dont like that choice then you have a two choices one you already picked which is to argue with the OP and then you have leave the thread and thats what im doing now seeing as its just a troll fest.

I really wish people would read through the thread. The OP has clearly stated that getting rid of Facebook is not a solution! And I agree with him, that is not a solution for everyone, even if you do not like to use Facebook. Either suggest something useful or leave it alone.

Times do change ya know. For example, 512mb of ram may have been acceptable back when you were using a P4 system, but it sure doesn't work now. Likewise, lowend, budget data plans may have been workable years ago with dumbphones that could barely web browse, but they don't fit in todays devices(especially HIGH END devices).

Also, your whole "i want to be cheap and pair a super budget data plan with a high end phone" thing reminds me of those people who do rather dumb things like buying a high end $350+ video card, then pairing it up with a $50 cpu.

This is exactly how I feel. The OP is asking for a solution, has had some good suggestions but still after 12 pages this thread goes on.

What tariff is your wife currently on? Maybe its not suited for her current phone + apps downloading data.

I don't think changing tariff with a more suitable data package is that drastic and not feasible? You first stated your wife was thinking of selling her phone due to this 'high' data usage, thats pretty OTT.

I'm on 3 so I haven't been one to worry about my data usage its unlimited for a very reasonable price. I just checked my usage - Since May 2012 I have received 28.6GB.

I would think there would cause for concern if your wifes phone was fine once month then this issue started to occur randomly. As she changed phone though who knows what the S3 wants to download, maybe your wifes FB activity is a lot more and she receives many more notifications.. who knows.

I know he's said his wife does not want to root the phone i said that in my post your obviously not reading anything also there are four options not three.

I never said you didn't say that.... I was agreeing with you... a novel concept for you I suppose.

Your other points are retarded though... the fact of the matter is that the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 and the ANDROID FACEBOOK APP are using (TOO MUCH) DATA. There is absolutely nothing anyone here can do about that. I guess you could friend Zuckerberg and ask him to re-write the app, sure.

This plays out in the three scenarios I've already listed... but I'll do it again so you understand;

a) Get rid of Facebook -> End-state: No more overages on data

b) Get rid of Phone -> End-state: No more overages on data as the iPhone 3GS uses way less data (supposedly)

c) Get more data -> End-state: No more overages on data (This can be done one of two ways, through the existing carrier, or switching). Assuming the OP got the phone on a contract and didn't pay outright for it, cancellation fees will be more than the slight increase in data fees.

The OP has refused to do any of the three scenarios.. none. They are the only possible outcomes to this issue. I don't understand why this is so hard to understand.

There is nothing you can do to stop the amount of data Facebook uses, it's a media intensive app.

Thank you for making it obvious that you can not read the Global Mod has already said post useful solutions and your still ranting and raving on, also just to point out a few things to you because you like to act smart.

1. Op is on pay and go

2. Op said that giffgaff looked good

So as you can see there is no contract to pay off and the op did not decline everything. I shall now ask the Mod to close this because there are no more useful solutions and you just seem to be getting angry

Ps there is NO need to TYPE like THIS!

    • OpenClaw now has native mobile apps on iOS and Android by Karthik Mudaliar OpenClaw, the viral open-source personal AI agent, now has its own mobile app, available on both Android and iOS. Users can pair the app with an existing OpenClaw gateway and can start using new mobile-native features that are now available on the app. The app supports all the existing features you'd already have seen on OpenClaw's TUI, as well as some more, such as real-time and background Talk mode, action approvals, sharing from iOS, and optional access to device capabilities such as camera, screen, location, photos, contacts, calendar, and reminders. These features are available on both the Android and iOS versions of the app. What's important with these apps is that they don't run OpenClaw on your phone, but are actually just companion apps that require a running OpenClaw Gateway on an existing device, on macOS, Linux, or Windows via WSL2. To pair the app with your existing OpenClaw gateway, users need to run the command "/pair qr" on the TUI or existing chat interface, which brings up a QR code. Users can then scan this QR code to pair it up with the mobile app. There's also an option to manually pair the app by entering the host and a port. Previously, OpenClaw had been available on phones via WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, and others. Now, with a native mobile app, the interface is much cleaner and more focused on just the OpenClaw, of course, with the added support for camera, screen, location, and more. It's important to note that OpenClaw comes with its own security warnings. There's always a chance of prompt injection with these tools, so users are recommended to double-check authentication, tool policy, sandboxing, and execution approvals rather than prompts alone. For users well-versed with the AI harness, a native mobile app makes it easier to approve an automation, share a link, use voice, or let an agent react to phone-side context.
    • Google pitches Spanner as one database for all AI agents with these new featues by Karthik Mudaliar Google Cloud is introducing new features within Spanner, its distributed database, as a place where enterprises should keep their data, using which AI agents could make smarter and better decisions. In a detailed blog post, Google highlighted quite a few features coming to Spanner, including relational data, graph relationships, vector search, key-value access, full-text search, and operational analytics together in one database architecture. Google says that today's systems aren't well-made for AI agents. There could be data that is present in one system, search indexes in another, embeddings in a vector database, and relationship data in a graph database. This fragmentation isn't great for AI agents to do their jobs because they don't have access to all of this data in one place. This is where Google is positioning Spanner as a solution. Spanner is already a globally distributed relational database with strong consistency, and Google wants its customers to see it as a broader data layer for AI applications. The company introduced something called Spanner Graph, along with integrated vector search, full-text search, a Cassandra-compatible key-value endpoint, and a columnar engine for analytical queries on operational data. Google also added that its ScaNN-powered vector search can support indexes with more than 10 billion vectors, while the columnar engine can make some analytical scans up to 200 times faster. All of this isn't just exclusive to the Google Cloud Platform, and there's support for multi-cloud as well. This comes via Spanner Omni, which Google says is a downloadable, containerized version of Spanner that can run on Kubernetes and in environments outside Google Cloud, including Microsoft Azure and AWS, and even on-premises infrastructure as well as edge deployments. Google says that customers who are interested in the full-featured edition should contact the company, and there's no word on commercial availability or separate pricing. Those interested can read the full blog by Google Cloud, which details these features individually.

    • They have lots of info on me, I have a facebook account and have done so for years, it was the thing to have then. My phone number is not on it. I don't have the Facebook app on my phone these days, just the messenger part, and only for a couple of people to contact me, most will text me via SMS or phone. I agree, Meta, like others, even without an account will know something about me. Just have to try and keep some things private Also, never saw the need for Whatsapp, people used to ask for me to join it, but as I said to them, I have SMS and a phone, use that, or email
