The Black Mental Health Alliance of Massachusetts has a message for kids who like to wear their pants “hip hop style”: “Pull up your pants. Respect yourself.” Or you could spend up to 3 years in state prison.

In a bizarre new PSA from the Massachusetts advocacy group, a police officer says into the camera, ““So you think you look pretty good wearing your pants like that, don’t you? Underwear exposed, hip hop style.”

He proceeds to explain that in Massachusetts, wearing saggy pants could get you up a $300 fine, 3 years in state prison or 2 years in a county jail. The officer doesn’t go into any more detail, but fine print at the bottom of the ad does reference Chapter 272, Section 16 of The Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Law, which states the aforementioned punishments for “gross lewdness and lascivious behavior.”

So if you’re planning on spending any time in Massachusetts in the near future, make sure your pants are securely fastened around your waist.

I seem to remember somewhere reading that in prison you wear your pants like that to indicate you are someones bitch.

So they might be quite happy to wear their pants like that ;)

I've never understood how it became 'cool' to show your butt.

I'm no big fan of saggy pants and those who wear them by any means, however, if you deem yourself so much better, treat other people with the respect you obviously expect from others, too.

It is a subculture, you might like it or not, but that's not what qualifies a culture for a culture.

On top of that, @topic: The amount of punishment is rather steep and obviously they are taking the law to a different area of context (a cultural expression) here.
I don't think saggy pants are very lewd, just ridiculous to look at.

Well, well done fellas... (Y)
Very witty

crazy fad, but amusing sometimes! I once saw a police car pull up to a gas station, and 2 guys wearing pants like that took off running. well, one of them must have let go of his belt buckle loops (or whatever they hold on to) and his pants went down and he fell right in the street! damn, i bet he had road rash all over his chest and face... he was running fast and went down hard!

It is, very cool and aesthetically pleasing, if you're female... :p

Kids have been wearing their pants like that for decades. Was dumb then, and is dumb now...even when I was a kid. 3yrs is extreme tho but I wouldnt mind them being fined. A lot of times underwear is shown or more...so its pretty much exposing yourself. And indecency..

This is kind of fitting, since this culture actually started in prison. It was a way of signaling to other inmates that you were "available" lol
