Iran sends monkey into space

Iran sent a capsule containing a live monkey into space on Monday and later retrieved the "shipment" intact, according to reports.

There was no independent confirmation of the report, which quoted a defence ministry statement. It said the launch coincided "with the days of" the Prophet Mohammad's birthday last week but gave no date.

IRNA said the monkey was sent into space on a Kavoshgar rocket. The rocket reached a height of more than 120 km (75 miles) and "returned its shipment intact", IRNA reported.

The Islamic Republic's state-run, English-language Press TV said the monkey was retrieved alive.

Iran announced plans in 2011 to send a monkey into space, but that attempt was reported to have failed.

Western powers are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be used to launch nuclear warheads.

Actually, Iran has been pursuing a manned space program for several years. Also remember that one of the first steps the US and USSR did was to launch animals; a chimp and a dog, respectively.

Just recently the Iranian Space Agency went to prototype on their spacesuit system, and we can presume thst this monkey's vehicle was a scaled-down version of their proposed crew spacecraft.

They expect to do a manned suborbital mission by the end of 2016, and a manned orbital mission by the end of 2019. The orbital mission will require a new medium lift launcher (~8-10 tonnes to low Earth orbit.)

Considering the extreme technological evolution that has been going on since the USSR and USA send their animals into space, I would have thought that sending relevant sensors would suffice, but perhaps it has to do with the message, more than the actual data gathering.

More like in vivo validation of their environmental and other life support systems, with publicity value as a secondary. They really are quite serious about their manned program.

A country that still practices stoning sending animals into space, I can only wish they send the apostate's blasphmirs and homosexuals there aswell instead of to the center of the town to be stoned to death.

Yes, and little was learned from sending animals into space. One of the Russian scientists said a few years ago that he regretted sending the dog into space. The poor thing died within a few hours from overheating. For what? Nothing.

Hey, that is racist. Oh, wait, it is Bush. It is OK if we compare him to Hitler, a monkey, or whatever you wish, as long as you don't say anything bad about the most glorious Obama, PBUH.

Congrats on injecting Obama hate into an innocent thread.

I think you know why calling Obama a monkey is racist, and that calling ANYONE Hitler is ignorant and wrong.

nohone, please note it was uncommented on when the hate was directed at bush, but as soon as you mention the messiah, obama, that you get dumped on.

rfirth, why is comparing bush to a monkey OK and not OK to criticize o'bama? is it because he is white and o'bama is only half white? both of them are illegal immigrants anyway, at least from my point of view. my family is in part native american and we never gave you permission to be here. like yours, our immigration system and border control stank & we gave you amnesty. look how that worked out for us.

more on topic, i did not hear any mention of prez. mymoody imadinnerjacket being missing long enough to have been up in space. (he's white, so it's OK to dis him, innit?)

raze, PETA have been trying to find a way to stealthily dispose of the 98% of pets they say they are going to rehome, and then actually kill them in the van as they pull away from the donative family that thinks the pet circumstance prevents them from keeping will find a new loving family. they have been dumping the carcasses in skips behind stores w/o permission, but it's inconvenient when they get caught. space is a great disposal location if they can get the cost down.

Wait, so someone compares Bush to a monkey, I turn the tables and say if we were to compare Obama to a monkey that would be racist, I am the one showing "hate?" How truly pathetic. While the last line I wrote was a joke - how Obama is worshipped and don't you dare say anything negative about him - what you wrote shows how true it really is. Attack anyone who does not "goose step" with the Democrat party line, while repeating exactly what is written/said about anyone who sits on the other side of the isle towards a Democrat, and you are a racist hater.

I know how it works. Try to shut down free speech when I use the very words (or in this case, a comment on a picture) that people speak/write about one person, and turn it towards another by calling everything that does not glorify Obama racist. Problem is, I don't play that game. So whine and claim I am racist all you want. It shows even more how intolerant you really are.

THey retrieved the capsule with the monkey still alive. What is the problem?

Wow! :omg: Take a chill pill, I was joking.

They claim they did. The Russians claimed that the dog they sent into space was euthanized before oxygen ran out several days later. The truth is that the dog died from overheating within hours. Iran isn't likely to report failure if they can help it.

If they were successful? Good for them. I didn't say there was necessarily a problem.

You guys. It's simple. Be reasonable. I'm on your side, but you're too blind to see that. This is just a special case. I'm not saying you can't criticize Obama. Go ahead. I'm not going to call you racist for criticizing Obama. Nobody is. Stop saying people call Republicans racist solely because they are criticizing Obama. It's not true and you're wasting your time. Seriously. Chill out. I never called you racist. I have a sense of humor. I can laugh at a good Obama joke.

Comparing Bush to a monkey isn't racist. But comparing Obama to a monkey is. Why? Think about it. Why is it funny to call Bush a monkey? Because that picture is funny, and some people think he's stupid. I'm not saying I agree with it. But it doesn't go any deeper than that. Now, why is it racist to call Obama a monkey? I'm not going to spell it out to you. Perhaps you should look up the term "porch monkey". Calling any person of African descent a monkey is incredibly racist. It has a different connotation. That's why.

It's like doing blackface. You just don't do it. And it really has nothing to do with Obama or his affiliation with the Democratic party.

if you post images of Bush as monkey then posting Images of Obama as a monkey is fair game. You don't get to post something offensive and then hide behind race.

It's not racist to compare Bush to a monkey - it may be elitist, it may be offensive but it's not racist, as it is based on his intelligence and not his racial heritage. Whereas saying "Peace Be Upon Him" is racist, because the accusation that Obama is a Muslim is based upon his racial heritage.

Getting back on topic, it's interesting that Iran and North Korea have both advanced their space programmes at a similar pace. That indicates assistant from an existing player in the field, like Russia or China. Then again, why should South Korea's satellite launch be acceptable yet North Korea and Iran's be unacceptable? Neither have shown any signs of aggression, unlike the US which has toppled government after government.

except arming insurrgents. and you least of all don't get to call for us to get "back on topic" when you're the one who derailed the topic to begin with with your racist bull crap. And it was racist to show Bush being compared to a monkey believing the race of your 'your guy' would some how make him immune to similiar depictions. Us republicans endured eight years of these insults comparing him to a monkey and to hitler. It's your guys turn in the hot seat and we won't allow him to get cover from his race. 'Do unto others'; pay back is a bitch.

    • Google reportedly set to lose two key Gemini and DeepMind researchers to Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly preparing to lose two more prominent artificial intelligence researchers, with Gemini contributors Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join rival AI developer Anthropic. According to a report from Bloomberg, both researchers are viewed internally as important contributors to Google’s flagship Gemini model family. Adler worked on Google’s AI coding efforts, while Pritzel was involved in the process used to train AI systems. Neither company has publicly confirmed the moves. The report also does not say when the researchers will formally leave Google or what positions they will hold at Anthropic. Training a large AI model requires decisions covering its architecture, data preparation, distributed computing infrastructure, and post-training methods that shape how the finished system behaves. Researchers with experience operating at the scale of Gemini are consequently difficult to replace quickly. Both Adler and Pritzel have previously contributed to Google DeepMind’s scientific research as well. They are listed among the authors of the company’s work on expanding AlphaFold protein-structure predictions across entire proteomes, alongside AlphaFold researchers including John Jumper. The reported departures arrive shortly after another important change within Google’s Gemini organization. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer is leaving Google for OpenAI, after returning to the search company in 2024 through its deal with Character.AI. Shazeer is particularly well known as one of the authors of the Transformer paper, whose architecture became the foundation for most modern large language models. Anthropic, meanwhile, has been recruiting recognizable figures from other leading laboratories. OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla AI director Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic’s pre-training team in May. His move, followed by the reported recruitment of several Google researchers, suggests Anthropic is strengthening the research teams responsible for the core capabilities of future Claude models rather than concentrating solely on product and enterprise sales. The competition is complicated by the companies’ extensive commercial relationships. Anthropic competes directly with Google’s Gemini models, but it also relies on Google as an infrastructure partner. In April, Anthropic announced an expanded agreement with Google and Broadcom covering multiple gigawatts of next-generation Tensor Processing Unit capacity. • Google adds built-in computer control to Gemini 3.5 flash by Karthik Mudaliar Google has added Computer Use as a built-in tool in Gemini 3.5 Flash, giving developers a single model that can reason about a task and operate graphical interfaces across browsers, mobile devices, and desktop environments. The feature is available through the Gemini API and Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, although it remains a preview feature for now. Computer Use enables an AI agent to examine screenshots and return actions such as mouse clicks, scrolling, and keyboard input. A developer’s application must execute those actions, capture the resulting screen, and send it back to Gemini, creating a continuous loop until the task is completed. Google says the integration can be used for activities including repetitive form filling, application testing, research across multiple websites, and longer enterprise workflows. Gemini 3.5 Flash can work with browser, mobile, and desktop environments, whereas Google’s earlier standalone Computer Use model was primarily positioned around browser interaction. The main change is consolidation. Computer control was previously offered through the separate Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview model. As Neowin reported when that model was introduced, it was designed to interpret a visual interface and generate actions without requiring a website-specific API. Google later brought Computer Use to preview versions of Gemini 3 Pro and Gemini 3 Flash in January 2026. The latest release now incorporates the tool into the stable Gemini 3.5 Flash model rather than requiring developers to select a specialized model solely for interface automation. Gemini 3.5 Flash itself was announced in May as Google’s latest fast model for coding and multi-step agent workflows. It supports a one-million-token input context window and up to 65,000 output tokens, along with adjustable thinking levels that let developers trade additional reasoning for lower latency and cost. Google also added that Gemini 3.5 Flash received targeted adversarial training for computer-use scenarios. The company is also offering safeguards that can require user confirmation before sensitive or irreversible actions and automatically stop a workflow when suspected prompt injection is detected. Its developer documentation describes configurable protections for areas such as financial transactions and changes to sensitive records. Google isn't the first to bring Computer Use to its platform. Anthropic has made computer control available through Claude, while OpenAI has continued improving computer-use performance in its recent models. Microsoft has also applied the concept to business workflows, including a Computer Use capability for the Researcher agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot.
