Galaxy S3 & Severe Weather Alerts

Recommended Posts

I have had my S3 since November 2012 and I have never gotten any severe weather alerts. I know for a fact I should have gotten one because my boyfriend also has the S3 and he got some today because of severe thunderstroms starting tonight and tomorrow. He said he has never turned on anything or got a special app to give him weather alerts. Why dont i get any? Is there somewhere in settings I need to go to turn on the alerts? I have tried to look for it in my weather widget (the regular one that came with the phone) but i dont see anything there in settings and i dont see anything in the regular settings. PLEASE HELP! :)

Might be a 3rd party weather app instead of default app.. go to app store and look for weather which apps will have notifications and alerts.

We both have verizon. and his area code is 804 an mine is 703. but we both live in the 703 area and he is getting the notifications and his weather widget is set for the 703 area just like mine is. He has changed his weather widget since he got his phone, but he got the severe weather alerts even when he had the weather widget i have which is the default one that cam with the phone

From my understanding that is done by the carrier and not the phone, but just make sure it's not an app he has that u don't have.

If its from the carrier do u both have numbers from the same area code?

It is not tied to your phone's number, area code, or any app.

The CMAS system is supposed to send you severe weather alerts based solely on the location of your phone (likely determined by the location of the cell tower you are connected to).

When I got my SGS3 back in July I too was anticipating getting these severe weather txts since both this phone and my carrier (Sprint) support it. I have never received a thing either and yes, emergency alerts is turned on in messaging.

And then people are complaining about getting too many even after the bad weather stuff has already passed. :p

- Do you have the same updates he has?

- Was your phone on at the time?

Go to your messaging app and hit settings and see if you can see Cell Broadcast stuff there (or check Settings - More... - Cell Broadcast - that's how it's on Standard AOSP, dunno about TouchWiz).

I have a Nexus 4 and I don't get them either. It supposed to work in that ANY phone that connects to a tower within a specific area should get the broadcast (as long as the phone has the software to accept it). I've seen people posted about them for AMBER alerts and all that but I never get them on my phone, dunno why either.

Stay safe though, I have my friends at GMU also and all over the DMV area, used to live in Bethesda!

we are both in the same location and have the same update (jelly bean 4.1) my phone was on and he got the notifications but not me. I went to my messaging settings and it says that all of the emergency alerts are turned on, however i never got them.

Go to your phone store and contact a rep and he/she will help you getting the alerts back so you will be able to get the alerts when the next actual event happens in your area.

Maybe your phone might be having a bug or corrupted during the production process... they may be able to give you a replacement phone.

I had my phone replaced because the phone I had was overheat... so I have one now and runs fine.

By the way, did you try the test alerts in the messaging settings? If you get nothing, then your phone is probably corrupted or has a bug. Contact your provider for a replacement or a fix.

Good luck.

Mine does have test alerts... Test alerts show you the sample to make sure it works and what it looks like so you will know what to do so you'd be prepared for actual event when happens.

Here is sample on my phone:

It's probably based on your GPS location. Even though you guys where right next to each other, if your GPS was disabled, you would not get the alert. GPS along with the local EAS system tend to work hand in hand. Thats why the GPS can get updated traffic reports on the fly and other details because of the EAS system.

GPS on my phone has been turned off since I got the phone and still get the alerts. It is not based on GPS... the carrier is sending the alerts to all of us based on the settings. Like you see alerts on your TV.. the TV provider sending the message to all of us.

I'm on T-Mobile, got a couple after getting my Phone, not have had any lately, Son's GS3 has never received one, my messaging app is set to alert on emergencies, including Amber Alerts

Wish it worked more reliably, I don't always watch the local news for weather updates

Right, it's by cell phone tower. They don't need to know your location at all. The towers in the areas affected just start beaming the message to whatever supported devices are listening.

I got a GS3 about a year ago, and I am having the same issues.  On my older phone that I had before this one, (a Samsung Captivate Glide [CG]) that had the feature and worked really well, matter of fact whenever it'd go off, I'd nearly crapped myself because it caught me off guard, yet it still was there to alert me to things going on important in life.  On the Samsung C.G., in the settings menu under the messages screen had an option for "emergency alerts," which I normally always had that active.  Ever since I recieved my GS3 though, I've noticed that setting absent from the options menu under the messaging screen.  I often wonder why this is, and also why the update that I ran on it to upgrade it to the next Android version (to 4.1.2?,) that didn't bring the phone "up to code" per say..?

Anyone with any ideas as to what's going on with this feature on AT&T phones, please enlighten us..?

Thanks!

    • The fact that memory in general is so high I have to take a loan out to build a computer now is just beyond stupid. Who's really to blame here? Low supply or high demand?
    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk. WACUP 1.99.51.24568 Preview changelog: Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when doing some of the drag + drop actions within the media library window Fixed a loading crash seen related to a problem with some of the artwork cache image files being restored which should now be better handled allowing for the bad image to be removed without it failing Fixed a deadlock seen from the recent crash reports when the internal metadata cache clearing is triggered which could block the main ui thread for too long with this now being moved to a background thread Fixed some performance issues with some of the methods related to determining artwork support which mainly affected the local library import / refresh (this is still slower for some compared to other players because there's more data & artwork aspects being checked for which means doing more processing on a single file despite the best of attempts to reduce duplicate / heavy processing where possible) Fixed a crash with the JTFE based missing files hotkey which no one seems to have used for an age for this to appear (maybe it's time to seriously consider stripping out features that aren't being used) Fixed how some of the file types which use extra information to reference their sub-songs is handled which was preventing some from being correctly resolved back to their base file (noticed fixing above) Fixed an issue with the handling of files with underscores in their filepath which wasn't being correctly handled causing some of the filename to be lost when shown as the title if title reading is delayed Fixed a few things that might be behind NotSoDirect not being stable for some setups though am still not certain that the changes done for this are going to fully resolve the problem from the crash reports Fixed the OS toast handling when there's no prior shortcut in the OS start menu to now create the shortcut (needed to allow the yes/no buttons for the new build / post-release toast) to be done as a hidden one so it's less likely to cause annoyance for those not wanting to see it whilst still allowing this less than ideal OS api implementation requirement to be met to avoid toasts without the needed buttons Fixed a regression when moving from taglib1 to taglib2 which broke some of the handling in place to allow for external programs to still access files when wacup has a held open cached instance of the file Everything else Updated cppwinrt (gen_win10shell.dll) to 3.0.260520.1 (26 May 2026) Updated libcurl (libcurl.dll) to 8.2.1 (24 Jun 2026) Updated Monkey's Audio (in_ape.dll) to 13.15 (28 Jun 2026) Updated mpg123 (mpg123.dll) to 1.33.6 (6 Jun 2026) Updated OpenSSL (libcurl.dll) to 3.5.7 (9 Jun 2026) Updated pugixml to 1.16 (16 Jun 2026) Updated taglib (tag2.dll) to 2.3.0 (11 May 2026) Updated vgmstream (in_vgmstream.dll) to the latest Git commit from 28 Jun 2026 Download: WACUP 64-bit | 9.6 MB (Freeware) Download: WACUP 32-bit View: WACUP Website | Screenshots Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
