IE10 Prequisite KB2670838 causing bluescreens on some configurations

Recommended Posts

Last week, Microsoft rolled out the second pack of updates for February 2013, in an attempt to fix some of the issues it found in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows RT.

In addition, the company delivered Internet Explorer 10 to Windows 7 computers, so a so-called platform update was necessary for all systems running this particular operating system in order to prepare them for the new browser.

The update labeled as KB2670838 was supposed to resolve issues in Windows, according to Microsoft?s advisory but, instead, it causes quite a lot of problems to Windows 7 users.

Several posts on Microsoft?s support forums indicate that this particular update results in a Blue Screen of Death on specific Windows 7 computers that continue to run Internet Explorer 9 after deploying it.

?Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable,? one user explains.

?KB2670838, after this update, some HP and Dell notebooks are having Blue Screen and black bar on Internet Explorer on right of its window. When they click that black bar BSOD pops and shuts down computer,? another Windows 7 user added.

The error displayed on the BSOD is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and is apparently related to the hybrid video card issue we told you about yesterday.

Microsoft has already confirmed the bug and said that it?s working on a fix to repair it as soon as possible.

?Microsoft is aware of an issue some customers are experiencing when installing KB2670838 on certain laptop systems with hybrid graphics. We are looking into the situation and are considering blocking the update for systems that could be affected. Customers who are experiencing issues on systems that already have installed the update should consider uninstalling KB2670838,? the company said.

The only workaround available at this point is to completely uninstall the KB2670838 update by going to Add/Remove Programs and removing the pack from the ?View Installed Updates? section.

Updating graphics drivers won't make any difference, KB2670838 is the update that brings some of the rendering APIs (D2D, Directwrite, D3D, WARP, and so on) necessary for IE10's enhancements to function. I'd wager the bug is in the way the rendering APIs handle the configuration rather than in the display drivers.

I had downgraded to win7 to give a try and see how it compared to win8. installed the preview and after roughly 10 minutes with IE10 preview....it BSOD. couldn't get it work properly. uninstalled it and kept on using IE9. but I found that after using win8 for so long win7 just didn't feel right. so i'm back with win8 and it's preinstalled IE10 browsing like lightening :)

Yup its a known cause now and a lot of people were posting on the MS answers site. KB2778344 is also crashing Win8 systems, with a 0x0000003b stop error. It looks like this update is crashing systems, that use AMD/ ATI videocards.

It conflicts with a driver. This is also a known cause if you're using Win8. This is also on the MS answers site

I use a some unofficial drivers from leshcatlabs.net He packages the latest drivers available for my hybrid graphics setup. I have windows 8 though. I wonder if this would have effected me.

edit: Apparently my computer is listed among the effected computers....

From what I've read it also crashes AMD systems (PC's that use AMD processors). In Win8

There is a fix for this KB2818604 a microcode update. But some people have reported that this along with KB2778344 does fix the crashing, but others it doesn't. But uninstalling KB2778344 may reduce or stop the crashing. But, in my case KB2818604 (probably) wouldnt fix the crashing (with the same stop error I had - 0x0000003b). Since this is an Intel CPU, not an AMD CPU. And I wont find out now, since I've removed Win8, and I've gone back to Win7

Btw, if noone has picked this up yet, Dotcom wins right to sue GCSB and the NZ Police. For illegal spying

The update KB2670838 was offered to me some time ago and immediately after installing it, I had troubles with the graphics on my computer, especially on my browser (firefox), but not only. Letters would appear choppy or it would take time till they appear correctly. So I went on and uninstalled it and everything was back to normal. Yesterday I installed IE10, and although I have taken the precaution to hide the kb2670838 update, it installed itself as part of ie10, causing the same problems as before. It took me some time to figure out what has happened and uninstalled it again. Of course ie10 was gone as well automatically.

I guess I'll have to wait for a fix if I want to upgrade into ie10.

I have windows 7 x64 and AMD athlonX2 dual core with latest amd drivers installed.

I also have experimented issues with this update. I have Windows 7 x64 and an NVidia GeForce GT 630 with 2GB Video RAM. Fortunately I don't get BSOD but Aero deactivates after I install the update. Problem Solver and FixIt for Aero can't fix it (But they both tell "Desktop Window manager" or something like that is not running). As soon as I uninstall the update, Aero is back.

    • Depends on what you need. Might be a bit clearer on what you plan to do with it. Sort of a waste if you get the newest and greatest, but don't know how to use it.

    • Hi everyone, I'm planning a small network upgrade and was wondering how others prepare their networks for future needs. Do you usually invest in higher-speed switches and better cabling from the start, or do you upgrade only when necessary? I'd be interested in hearing what has worked well for you and any lessons you've learned over time. Thanks!
