Windows 8.1 is a service pack (smh)! Why would microsoft make new versions of WIndows 8 yearly and charge for them, that is rediculous and absurd! No one is going to want to reinstall Windows everytime they release another version of 8. I believe 8.1 will be a free service pack update that installs like all the other updates did in the past!

8.1 is not a service pack, the definition of a service pack as per Microsoft, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684

Definition: A service pack is a tested, cumulative set of all hotfixes, security updates, critical updates, and updates. Service packs may also contain additional fixes for problems that are found internally since the release of the product and a limited number of customer-requested design changes or features.

They haven't said if they'll charge for this or not but the fact is it's more than a service pack at this point. Look at all the new features we've seen so far plus new apps they're adding and let's not forget the new version of internet explorer 11. We're not even close to the M2 build let alone the final so who knows how much else they'll add into it till then? I expect it to be free but if not I'm fine with a small fee, $10 or so.

I don't think they will charge anything for it. Windows 8 is sold now for ?200. Beside, as soon as Blue is out, it will be impossible to add new apps to the store that are made with the Windows 8 SDK, than you need to use the Windows 8.1 SDK. Also, it would be very odd to add new features to all your software (Visual Studio, Office, Windows Phone, etc.) for free, but not for Windows. I say: it's free.

XP SP2 can be listed as the exception here. It was a lot more than a standard service pack.

Thats because Microsoft had to weed out the bad practices and catch up with modern concepts (eg. user levels...).
