BoDEAN
I reformatted my SSD and Installed it clean from a Jumpdrive. Do you install windows 8 first, then boot off the iso/thumbdrive with 8.1 on it, and install that? Or can you just install 8.1 from scratch? AsherGZ
You can but its no different from a clean install since you'll have to reinstall all apps and software.

LightEco
Clean install is the way to go. Less problems and less chance of trouble occurring. I clean installed off a flash drive, took about 15 minutes and its working flawlessly.
Night Prowler
Started out with a clean install, and I really wasn't looking forward to installing all my non-metro applications. I then pushed my 8.0 image back, which was running flawlessly. I then preformed an upgrade. The upgrade went flawless. Thought Start8 would croak on the install but everything seems to have made the transition. What I found was; SEP seems to have a problem in the new IE11, Ad Muncher doesn't work in IE11, and Roboform fails in IE11. Went back to 8.0, but will do a clean install after there are some verified updates to some of the apps I love to use. This has nothing to do with 8.1, as it is all due to the fact 8.1 was not supposed to be available until October, which would give all the developers enough time to make their programs 8.1 compatable. streetw0lf
My first install of 8.1 was an upgrade over 8.0. Went very well. After awhile I tried a clean install on it where I replied to save nothing. It started the install then I abruptly got a message that it was reverting back to my old Windows 8.1. Is it possible to do a clean install of 8.1 on a 8.0 system? I did it on an 8.1 system which might explain the failure to install.
McKay
It's asking me for my product key, it hasn't picked it up automatically from the BIOS? I thought that's how product keys were handled now? This machine came pre-installed with Windows

NateB1
Did a clean install with the provided key, then used my Win 8 key to activate. Worked great! In my home test server, discovered that my TechNet Server 2012 keys don't work with Server 2012 R2. The install-with-provided-key-and-activate-with-original-key method didn't work. :(
BoDEAN
I wondering if I should redo the install. Would like to ask for users opinions. I installed Windows 8, fresh format. Upon first boot, put in the 8.1 RTM disk, and installed 8.1 Reading a lot of people just do a full install from 8.1 RTM (and skip 8.0). Would you redo the install or should it be fine how I did it? George P Global Moderator Posted September 3, 2013 Global Moderator Share Posted September 3, 2013 Since more and more people are saying they're having problems with apps not working right from time to time I'll hold off and wait for GA and just update from the store. One thing though, will the RTM update show up in the store for people on preview as well?
