It was once as American as, well, blue jeans to start your day with a bowl of cereal and milk. Breakfast grains were once major sponsors behind kid-oriented television programming, or licensed beloved fictionalcharacters to put on cereal boxes. Now sales at major cereal companies are down, and a variety of reasons are contributing to the decline.

Earnings at Kellogg are down 15%, but it?s not just the big, expensive brand names that are falling out of favor. Cereal sales overall are down about 6%?the same amount that denim sales have fallen. Oh, no, America, what?s happening?

It?s a combination of things. Many Americans have to adjust their diets for celiac disease, which eliminates many traditional grains from their diets. On a wider scale, parents have finally figured out that maybe sugar-encrusted bits of wheat and marshmallows are not the most nutritious thing that children could eat first thing in the morning. ?With childhood obesity at historically high levels, health-conscious parents are aiming to cut down the volume of breakfast cereals consumed by their offspring,? pointed out one industry analyst in a report.

What are we eating instead? Cereal companies aim to get into the breakfast shake and cereal bar business, figuring that maybe we?ll eat those as we hurry out the door. We might still eat granola, but less of it, and sprinkled in a container of Greek yogurt.

Why Don?t Americans Like Breakfast Cereal Anymore? [AdWeek]

americans are gradually not eating breakfast.

2 main reasons

1. too busy

2. mothers are more concerned with work than family.

No, we're eating breakfast just not cereal.

Many of us are stopping on the way to work / drop off the kids to have a breakfast burrito or sandwich (ick x 2) and others are eating toaster pop ups on the run.

Some of us actually eat a real breakfast with real foods (hand-wave) but I fear it's a disappearing practice.

Or maybe just a slice or two of toast and some fruit... Lots of reasons really... Most cereal is NOT good for you anyway...

What led you to believe that?

My fave is a mushroom omelette with a 4oz glass of OJ, and a cup of Greek yogurt or a banana.

The cereals these days are so processed to the point of being unhealthy. I stopped eating most cereals the day I started counting calories. Lost whopping 20 kg in 6 months because of such a simple change.

I gave up cereals when they all shifted over to whole grain. I don't handle whole grain well personally. It causes pain for me. So I just switched over to instant breakfast with skim milk.

I don't know what it's like in the US tbh.

But if it's anything like the UK I'd blame it on cereal being vastly overpriced these days, especially and specifically all of the Kellogg cereals. Far too many brands they produce being pure sugar trash which people are moving away from for healthier options.

My Mom, 65, has been eating Special K cereal since I was a kid. She was overweight, went on a diet and lost 92 lbs so far. She was sent to a nutritionist to  make sure she was eating properly and one of the things he stopped her from eating was the Special K cereal. (which is made by Kellogg's) Could be a conspiracy by all Nutritionist against Kellogg's. :shifty:

Then wouldn't Rice Chex (advertised as gluten free) sales be up?

I personally used to eat cereal exclusively for breakfast. It was usually Cheerios or a granola cereal and fat free milk. But then I made a conscious decision to eat better, and I stopped having cereal and milk all together. Now a days it's just assorted fruit and some almonds, and once or twice a week I get an egg white omelet with veggies.

Could it be tied to milk consumption going down as well?

Myself, I tend to react to milk as I grew older so cereal eating pretty much stopped a long time ago.

They aren't missing much, just a carb fest.

All I have for breakfast is a home made mocha. That usually gets me from 8am til 12 pm / 1pm.

Yes they are, in the workplace.

OT: I don't eat breakfast much anymore. I know I probably should...oh well.
