So I guess a 1440p monitor would be good, IPS, with a 60Hz+ framerate, or just keep the ROG SWIFT.

 

Also someone on reddit recommended 970 2x SLI instead of one 980. Thoughts?

 

The monitor may be the most personally subjective component of a new system. It's your eyes :) It also depends on what you will be doing with it. With your budget and the rest of your system, I would personally go with a 34" Ultrawide 1440p @ 60Hz and SLI. If you want to go with a standard 16:9 ration, the ROG Swift is currently best in class and I think they only 144Hz monitor available at that resolution. You can't go wrong either way, it's really personal preference once you get past budgetary issues.

If you want to go to SLI right away two 970 would be great. I went with the MSI Gaming 4g 980 myself and then will be getting a second one later on

yeah I guess it would be better to get a 980 and then SLI it later on.
