Mariah Carey : The worlds worst lip syncer

Recommended Posts

why would someone go to a concert to watch a singer lipsync? I'd ask for my money back. The truth is, Mariah's voice has been terrible for years, that's why she needs so much backing.

Who cares?  I've seen recent stuff where she IS singing and it sounds acceptable.

I'd assume lip syncing would not be her decision, or if the artist is unwell but can't cancel the performance perhaps.  Too many shows in a row thrashed her out?

It's a bit rich some of these people who have never performed live vocals let alone a lengthy tour of night after night having people expect your voice to be recording-grade every single time.

I can't say I'm a fan of Mariah, but you people need to be more realistic.  She is doing a terrible job of lip syncing though, that much is true.

If a singer or band makes the effort, it doesn't really matter. Take Coldplay for instance. Chris Martin's voice can sound weak or limp on occasion when playing live, but he always puts in the effort and actually sings. In contrast these lipsyncers are deceiving their audience. It's one thing if they're jumping all over the stage with a convoluted dance routine, but in this video? Sorry there's no excuse. And by the way, it's not the first time Mariah has lipsynced. She's been doing it for years. As I said before, her voice is almost gone. A bit like Whitney Houston's did later in her life.

Fair call.  I remember seeing Rhianna perform live (don't ask) and she was employing ALL the tricks, she had a soft singing backing track that she would let do a lot of the work, she would point the mic to the crowd, move the mic away if she was running out of breath.  Sing one line then talk to the crowd.

I do agree with your point on effort though, tune the songs down or sing them lower or something, but actually attempt to sing them.

As a musician I have issues with this kinda thing, but the masses (the sheep) are fine with it. Ozzy has been doing it for longer than most of us have been alive, and he doesn't rely on lip-syncing or studio magic. I know a singers instrument is their voice and different every time, but if ya can't do it, time to find another job.

Yeah, that's why I have to play in drop D or D because the singer can't hit the high notes anymore, like they could in their youth.

My motto is: if you can't do it/play it live (without help), don't do it.
