Apple Removes All American Civil War Games - Because of the Confederate Flag

Recommended Posts

He's supporting removing the flag from media depicting the Civil War, citing the need to remove symbols of hate as the reason for his support. I'd say we're getting his point quite accurately. The main point of contention is whether games qualify as legitimate media that should be "allowed" to depict said symbol.

From reading his replies, I still feel you and some others are assuming more then what is being said. Like I suggested, pretty sure he means exactly what I said too. quote "Easy way to think of it for those having a problem understanding "why?". Don't think of it as an "object" being removed, think of the message that's being used WITH the object. If used in a way to inspire/promote hatred and/or similar ideals, banned. Not too hard."

I guess it all comes down to interpretation and I don't interpret the way you guys are suggesting. Could I be wrong? Yes. Could you be wrong? Yes.

That's absolutely not what he said or inferred. he straight out said that the flag should be removed from ALL usage except museums AND straight out said that games, movies and media cannot be learning tools...

I do not see it in the thread, but if it was said, yes, I disagree IF it was said the way you wrote it.

Can I ask what is your opinion on the lyrics in rap music, about glorifying killing, drug dealing, sexism etc? Should rap music be removed from American culture?

I can't comment on rap music, Jazz is my preference. The friends that I have who are black don't even lesson to music glorifying the things you mentioned. Additionally, I've heard heavy metal and rock music with lyrics just as bad. I'm not sure why you're singling out a specific genre.  :/

Have you seen your avatar?

What is your point exactly. Is there an issue with displaying a rank I worked my behind off to achieve?   :pinch:

I consider myself reasonably progressive but this is an annoying case of hysterical over reaction. Just like the swastikas in Wolfenstein, the confederate flag has historical significance so there's nothing wrong with it being depicted in historical gaming titles. The culture we live in where we over react so hysterically with moral panics just makes me feel like we live in societies full of morons.

Not sure why this is causing any uproar at all... The Apple App Store isn't public property and is subject to whatever censorship rules Apple decides; for whatever reason.

My guess is that some in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan might find it offensive.

I think part of it though comes down to Apples dominance and market share, but then, that was an issue even before this happened... they like to throw their weight around to sway things

Sure, but even WalMart, with their massive retail dominance, is allowed to censor products. For instance, they don't appear to sell sex toys, porn, animals, lumber, and other things at WalMart, but no one complains about how that impacts the market.

People tend to make the case that Apple is a monopoly since their devices don't allow alternative App Stores for users to purchase from, but the Justice Department has yet to sue them in court asserting this. So, as of right now they aren't a monopoly with monopolist restrictions.

We do. It's just taken widely available Internet access across most of the planet to let us know that it isn't that you happen to live in an area full of idiots, it's like that everywhere on the planet.

I'd be more inclined to accept this if Apple had banned anything containing the flag. At least that would be consistent.

If Apple could provide a reasoned argument why

A) The Confederate flag being used in a historical context is bad

B) Why movies and books are exempt but video games aren't

Then I, for one, might actually back their decision.

Sure, but they don't have to. They can use any reason they want to censor things in their own private space as long as they aren't violating any laws...

Giving you an explanation that you want is nice, but not mandated anywhere.

And people are allowed to voice their opinion when a corporation does something stupid to make them change. which they apparently did.

I'm not one to stifle debate. I never said the poster shouldn't criticize Apple if they deem it worthy of criticism...

We just disagree that Apple is required to explain themselves to the extent the poster desires. A friendly disagreement mind you. As we're both merely exchanging our opinions on the topic at hand.

That is called flipping censorship.

How about you remove that perverted avatar picture of yours that has killed so many people over the years for your leaders' disgusting ######?

Nothing perverted about my avatar Sir. Sorry (not really), but the avatar is staying put. Cover your eyes when you see my posts, or better yet, ignore me.

My guess is that some in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan might find it offensive.

Understandable.
