Thomas the Tank Engine
Back in 2014, China has announced an ambitious engineering plan to build a bullet train railway to America trough Russia. This plan might seem ridiculous to virtually everyone, but if Beijing gets its way that’s exactly what will be possible in the future. The idea is to drive a railway route from Beijing to America via Russia, running under the Bering Strait to Alaska, Canada and America. The proposed line would begin in north-east China and run up through Siberia, pass through a tunnel underneath the Pacific Ocean then cut through Alaska and Canada to reach the continental US. According to a report in the Beijing Times, the country is considering building a new high-speed railway that would ultimately connect it with the lower 48 states of the United States. Specifically, the route currently under consideration would begin in northeastern China and run through Siberia to the Bering Strait. At this point, there would be an underground tunnel that cuts through the Pacific Ocean to connect Russia and Alaska, from which the train would continue south through Canada until arriving again in the United States. The mega railway network, called “China-Russia-Canada-America,” would run for 13,000km, about 3,000km further than the Trans-Siberian Railway, including a 200km (125-mil)e undersea tunnel across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. The entire trip would take two days, with the train travelling at an average of 350km/h (220mph), as the international date line splits the islands, which are known as Tomorrow Island and Yesterday Isle. PGHammer
The ambition is due to the politics - however, it's certainly practical, as it's based on current-technology engineering; primarily the Channel Tunnel and subway tunnel technology going back before it (which is also used for everything from road tunnels to pipelines). The Channel Tunnel "itself" was laughed off due to the politics - not the practicality; the original idea dated back to the nineteenth century, and no less than Napoleon. A similar idea (New York, NY/Paris, FR) was not JUST referred to in the song "Beautiful World" by Steely Dan, but in an article in the US-based "Roads and Bridges" - which is itself a technical publication of the American Society of Civil Engineers. (The ASCE is to construction what the IEE/IEEE are to electronics- and their articles are just as grounded in terms of technical practicality - the "Onion" they are not! The issues are not small - however, they don't have a thing to do with practicality.
DocM
There are issues, security being one, but technically it's very possible. One item which some people bring up is continental drift causing an Asia <-> North America tunnel to shift, but crossing at or near the Bering Strait mitigates this: that part of Russia is actually on the North American tectonic plate. trag3dy
While somewhat interesting I don't get the purpose? Why not just fly?

I'm guessing that the purpose would be more for shipping than for travel. A train route from China to the US for shipping goods would be far faster than cargo ships and far cheaper than cargo planes. DocM
Rail can also handle cargo, tankers and containers which aircraft cannot.

Well that makes sense, then. +E.Worm Jimmy 1 Share
Torolol
This will probably profiting China than Canada/America based on current goods export/import ratio
Sir Topham Hatt
Plus, the amount of CO2 pumped out by planes, even the modern ones is awful compared with rail...
ThisSiteHasLostItsCharm
it would make a great tv show / series, showing how it's constructed. coming soon to Discovery MEGARAIL The Great Rail Build. or something like that.... Cannot wait. There was a NatGeo show (I believe) which described the building of the Tibetan line and the oxygen units within the trains that the passengers need.
