How does Kazaa & Morpheus work???

Recommended Posts

Can someone explain how Kazaa and Morpheus work? I know it connects to different networks, but what does that mean and stuff?

I thought the programs just connect to a main server for a list of stuff and then you connect to the accual peoples computer through like point to point or something.

I'm not talking about that. I'm asking how they work. Like what is the deal on how they accually work, like connecting to servers and stuff. I know that Morpheus dosen't work now and I know Kazaa is a big spyware program, but Kazaa seems to be the best for now and I was just wondering how they work. Like when it says a user is from some other program or server or whatever and all that jazz...

unlike napster there is no main server. what kazaa and the fasttrack technology does is it designates supernodes. Hardcoded in kazaa/morpheus is a set of well known nodes, that changes and is updated upon your first connection to the network. These nodes that are designated a supernode gather lists of files from the nodes connected to them...

This means if morpheus or kazaa got busted and had to shut down....they couldn't....because even if a few of the large supernodes got shutdown the program just designates new ones. hence the do/do not funtion as a supernode option in both programs.

A local node or supernode is chosen based on connection speed. if you wanna get an idea of your local nodes and your supernode you can use a firewall such as nortons...then goto view statistics and you can watch the ip addresses pop up as kazaa/morpheus client searches for a node to connect too

AFAIK, Morpheus can only connect to one network: the FastTrack network. This is the same one that KaZaa and Grokster (and a few others - WinMX?) connect to.

How it works is like this (IMO): Morpheus connects to a known server, logs in, gets a list of geographically close peers (ie. computers close to yours). Searches are done by propagating search queries to all the peers, which pass it on to their peers, and so on. Downloads just connect directly to the user with the file you want.

Of course, it's more complicated than that. Computers drop out of the network, and new ones join. But that's the basic gist.
