Installing Redhat problems

Recommended Posts

Ok I've got a problem here and this time it's not due to my lack of research. I decided to install RH and everything is going great. Great until I hit about 5 mins into the installation. The computer stops reading the disc and I'm basically screwed. Here is the last time it messed up:

Package: ed-0.2-28

Size: 120Kb

Summary: GNU line editor

Stops at about: 5:40 seconds

size already installed: 376 MB

remaining time: 17 minutes

I did a Media check when it asked me two and all the discs passed. It seems as though my cd-r stopped reading the disc and copying the files. I gave it 6 GB (out of my small 20 GB Har drive for testing purposes) of HD space but I wonder if it needs more? If so I might have to get rid of XP but I'd rather reinstall XP again instead of installing RedHat. Can anyone help me? I'm ready to get rid of XP for the sake of exploring different OS.

The problem must be with your CDs.. Have you let RedHat's cd check to scan on your CD when you boot into CD? If not, then you will need to verify the MD5 sums on your three ISO files to make sure they are fine. Also, it's good idea to disable your PnP (Play-n-Plug) in the BIOS.

Nah, that's plenty space for *nix.

Don't worry, it's all good now. It wasn't the cd, it was the space (GB) I gave it. Anyway RedHat is pretty good right now, trying to adjust to the new feel. Fonts are nice as I was browsing aroung but does anyone know how to turn the anti-aliasing on for web content because mine looks wierd, not like Clear type (something like that) on XP.

What? Are you telling the truth, it was 6 gigs? I find that's hard to believe.

There are too many topics about it, I highly recommend you to use the search function in here or read each topics.

Hard to believe that it was 6 GB and didn't work or hard to believe that it 6 GB and should have been more? In any case everything has gone fine after I gave it more room to breathe.

Well I think I gave to much to XP that's why. In any case I've got more problems.

1 - When I tried to install truetype fonts in the root directory (right?) I can't. Even after I logged on with admin privileges I can't. Can someone help me?

2 - For some reason my mp3s won't work on xmms so I need help there... any way I know this might seem simple some I'm working on this (2) now.

1. Create a .fonts dir in your home dir

eg: /home/panorama/.fonts if you log in as root its /root/.fonts

mkdir is the command to make a dir

after you make the directory copy the ttf fonts to it, reboot and that it :)

2. You need to download the mp3 plugin seperately

Out of the box only KDE's browser/file manager Konqueror supports Anti-aliased fonts. RH 8 has a font installer. Use it. It will update the neccesary links and font cache. RH8 does not support MP3 playing. You need to do a search on Google to find the documentation to enable MP3 playback. Basically it involves installing some additional libraries. BTW, there is no way that a 6 gig partition would have caused the install to pause or terminate.
